I am thinking of a word that starts with the letter F
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:35:50 pm »

Thing is, it still runs fine..... All I can think of is some bolt or something let go and got caught between the rod and block. Time to clean the garage.  >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

that looks nasty..

was it that nasty before it broke the block?

this is the second VW engine ive seen do that, and not throw a rod..

my grandpa had a 1.5D that put a hole in the block, and it still ran fine. he patched the block with a piece of cast iron frying pan..

got an old frying pan and a welder?

Lord Verminaard dropped a nut when doing his HG it fell through to the bottom...he now has a 1/2" MPT pipe plug in it and it is running to this day.

IIRC this is your mud/offroad vehicle? If so I would say that will buff out  ;)

Ouch!!! I had this happen to my kids honda CR 80, broke a piston skirt off and got wedged between the rod and case.
Sorry for your loss, and curious to know what caused it.

Just drove it in the garage, pan will be off in a bit. More pics/info to follow. Yeah, I'm thinking weld something over it too. I could always buy a pan. Already looked, and no local TDI blocks for sale.

#2 main bearing cap, crap! Think the cap broke, then the bolts? Or the other way around? Either way, it looks like I will be down for quite a while.  :'(

yea, i remember this happening not that long ago..

dropped the main cap, and had 2 bolt heads with shanks, and the threaded portion of the bolt broke off cleanly at the block..

Yep, my bolts were broken cleanly too, unscrewed them by hand. Does ARP make bearing bolts for these engines, or to TDI's have a different size bolt? Wondering if I should upgrade the bolt quality or size next time. I have the ARP head bolts luckily, with as many times as the head has been on and off. I also know all the bolts were torqued to spec, but maybe during my runaway years ago, or when it just plain got a lot of oil in the cylinders after my accident, that weakened something.

ARP head bolts or studs? theres a BIG difference between the 2.

im not aware of ARP making a head bolt, just studs.. so, im assuming that you got studs.

pretty sure you can get main studs for these engines from ARP, FWIW..

if i see too many more AAZ engines crapping main caps out the side of the block, im going to assume most of them do it at some point..

Ouch
1985 jetta TD. It was free, and it shows. Down and dirty engine refresh made it run fairly well.... No leaks, except water into the cabin!

2001 golf Tdi. Heavy built ALH, soon to have a PD Frankenstein motor.

My bad, they are studs. Although I can't prove anything, I am thinking it's the cap bolts which are letting loose rather than the cap breaking, so I'm hoping different bolts or studs will prevent this issue.

When I did my 1.6 I used UNBRAKO socket head cap screws and torqued them an extra 5ft/lbs. They have the highest tensile strength of any 12.9 bolt. That said they need a bit more to stretch them. It didn't change the main bearing clearance for me, so that is what I did. If I do a 1.9 I think I will add a machined girdle over the main cap for extra safety.
