its called a proportining valve.. german only.. aka cabby/jetta thru 84.. 85 came a new design.. but used from 75-84 german cars..

the 85+ new are over 200 new..

the problem with used ones are if the fluid never gets changed they rust inside and get stuck..

some people bypass them.. wish i had better news for ya..

there FUGGIN SPENDY.. ive dealt with that valve a few times.

my best piece of advice, start looking on mk2, and mk3 cars for the prop valve. get a used one from one of those..

and everyone says it matters what system brake parts come from, but ive mixed and matched just about every brake pieces i can, and they all work fine together..

my 85 GTI had a 98 mk3 master cylinder on it, a prop valve off a german 92 GLI (ABS), and the front brakes off the same car.

anyway, even with my mismatched stuff, that car had the best stock brakes out of any VW that ive ever owned.

people say that an ABS prop valve wont work on non-abs.. probably wont have to worry about ABS stuff unless you get mk3 parts.

i couldnt either..

so i drove around with no rear brakes till i could find a new valve.. i used split-shots (little weights you clip on your fishing line) to plug my lines.. worked good till i got a new prop valve, i just drove the car with the thought in my mind that i had no rear brakes, and i followed people a little farther back, and such..

That reminds me that I have an '81 Rabbit Convertible ( Cabriolet ) that I am going to try to re-engine and get running over Christmas that has one of these ( that leaks).

Is the valve used on all the German MKI chassis including the later Cabriolets ( up to 92?)

My source for these states that they're the same, for all mk2s, all the way from 85 to 92 and also on the Passat.

ive read many different places that the ABS and non-ABS prop valves are DIFFERENT, but i noticed nothing different.. should have checked part numbers..

the ABS prop valve is still on my 85 GTI, and still works.

abs vs non abs... 1 line in and 2 out... non abs has 2 lines in... mk2-3 are way different then mk1.. none of the lines or mounts points are the same..

no dude, my car had 1 line going to a T, then 2 lines coming out of the splitter, and 2 lines into the prop valve.. 92 german GLI 16v w/abs..

still got all the parts and goofy brake line T.. want me to take a picture?

ABS prop valve still has 2 ports in and out. it just has a splitter in front of the valve in the feed line.

yes, one line feeds it, but no, it doesnt have one inlet, still has 2.
