Guys,

Thought I'd post an update on my mk3 project. Not much left now. Just need to fabricate the exhaust, fit the headliner, set the camber and tracking and a little other bit of detial work on the interior.

Its sittng on RS007 wheels, converted to 5 stud, using VR6 assemblies. Adjsutable suspension from FK automotive (koni inserts), resprayed, arches rolled and GTi arch covers removed, roof ariel removed and rear wiper removed.

Full black leather retrim by MJ interiors.

The intercooler pipework is all 316 ss, I fabricated it on new years day passed. Used a standard mk3 intercooler also.

New GT15 turbo............ The little brass boost controller I made myself also. Took 6 hours of turning and a little CNC milling + some silver soldering.

The Mk3 TDi airbox was used and to remove the MAF sensor... I cnc'd an aluminium item to take up its place. Hate to see a sensor sitting doing nothing.

Thanks guys for the replies. Makes it all worth it !

On a quick add up I would estimate no more than £4500. I dont think thats too bad when you consider that more or less everything is new. That excludes the engine,gearbox and dash. Apart from that, you name it, it was probably new.

It wont be driven as a daily driver by the way. Couldnt risk any damage to it. Maybe a sunday or summer car.

Tuned mk3's dont seem to be very popular. People here especially, dont like the 'fat' look compared to the mk2. No doubt the build quality didnt match the mk2, but that can all be sorted. More room in the engine bay too. They are heavy though !

I've been having quite a bit of luck lately. Seat Cordoba TDi landed in my feild the other night. Complete write off but the drive train is largely undamaged. 1.9 TDi, 90 brake 1Z. Talk about being given it on a plate. Guy gave it too me for very little money. Couldnt touch the engine in that car though..new project I think.... my VW main dealer parts man is sick of me :lol: !

the stianless pipes are welded togeather by the way. I used small stainless rods, 3 of them, tacked along the bottom to stop them vibrating and rubbing. I simply used a 38 > 51 reducer to match to the turbo. The stainless wasnt cheap, but it will last.

Well here in the UK the mk3 is very unpopular. Lucky for me, they dont hold there value very well which makes them quite easily affordable. I prefer the mk3's shape to the mk2 and the good thing is they have more room under the bonnet and if its a TDi, GTi or VR6, it will have a clutch slave cylinder for running a cable change box. Cant put power to a rod shift box, they just blow apart ! I've another couple of engines on the stands at the minute. Both 1.9's, 1 TDi the other IDI. So i'm on the look-out for another 3 door mk3, this time a GTi so I dont have to change all the driveshafts and hubs to make it 5 stud, and the GTi comes with rear calipers also. The only thing I dont like is the GTi comes with a sunroof, must be standard cause I've never seen one without a sunroof. I dont like sunroofs, they just look so ugly when your running your eye over the cars lines. I'll have to cut out the roof skin and weld in a complete one.

The Mk2 holds its money very well here, almost like no other car of that age. Your talking up to £2500 for a mint mk2 Gti 3 door, and no less than £1000 even if its a little rough. If its got rust then thats another story, but there usually very good. Its amazing, i've never talked to someone who had a bad thing to say about the mk2. Everyone seems to like them here. Many people have said to me the body shape never ages....dont know about that, cant really agree. Still excellent looking cars when the big bumpers are straight and not faded.

What spec is your mk2 ?

The Mk3 are kind of shuned over here in eastern canada as well,and most of the guys tunning them try to make them as Japanese as possible with the most untastfull mods you could think off, im talking, Ugly body kits, wings, 3 1/2 inch coffe can mufflers. Nothing even close to that piece of art you have sitting in your garage.

My mk2 is a 1991 Golf 5 door 1.6 NA diesel, I love the look of the car and how it runs, but mine has 420000km on it and although It runs well its just a little on the slow side, so now its for sale and I'v found myself a nice little mk3 with only 70000 on a rebuilt 1.6TD (last guy forgot to change the timming belt), only problem is its a 5 door and its bright red but I plan to paint it so the later of the two will be fixed. Anyway that my blurt.

The 5 door looks good in a mk3 also, no worries there.

I know there is a shortage of 1.9 diesels down in the US but in Canada you should be able to get togeather a nice motor.

What are your plans for the car ?

It might be more cost effective to properly tune the freshly rebuilt 1.6TD, instead of starting over with a new 1.9TD rebuild/crank fix, and swap

I had the option to swap in a 1.9TD or 1.9L ALH TDI (had one with 70,000km in block and a new head) in my 1997 MK3 Golf (3 door) but I chose a 1.6TD swap instead with performance in mind. Personal preference mostly

and I'm just assuring Luc that hope is not lost with a 1.6TD (if he's concerned about it at all). Your MK3 looks fabulous by the way, love it!

My plans are first and formost to sell my mk2 once that is done I'm going to get the body work out of the way the car has quite a bit of rust, once thats done it will take me untill spring to get the car paid off, because im curently in my last year of high school and work is slim,but when summer rolls around and i get a steady job im thinking intercooler maybe bigger turbo, short shift, some handleing mods to make the car handle better. but I'm open to sugestions from the masses and you can all expect pics as soon as I get it. Oh but im definatly going to stick with the 1.6 at least for a little while im more into taking corners fast then anything.
