By passing the air compressor.

Hello, i was wondering if there was any way to by pass the air compressor unit on my 81 Rabbit.  The car only has the compressor as the previous owner took out the rest of the system for what ever reason... I was just wondering if there was anyway to by pass it completely as I'm doing work on my water pump right now and would rather not have to deal with putting it back in...

air compressor? you talking about the a/c pump?

the correct bracketry and pulleys will get rid of that..

if you dont have the right stuff to eliminate it, just re-install it and live with it for a while..

81 should have the pump down low, in front of the water pump..

non-ac alt bracket, and non-ac pullies will fix you right up..

well, if you live somewhere, like the pacific northwest, and your HOTTEST days are 70-80*, then there is no need to pack around a full a/c system all year round, when you may use it 1 time a year..

i take the a/c off all of my cars..

the a/c system in a VW weighs like 50 lbs total..

I don't have AC on any of my vehicles currently, and I've only ever owned one car that had it.  I tended to use it a lot more to defog the windows than I ever did to cool the car down!!  Go West Coast!

Keep those parts handy, Climate Change is coming to your neighborhood.  However for us in the PNW it might mean longer wet and cool periods but to have the A/C for defogging is the best.  A few minutes on Max air and they are dry as can be.  Works to suck the moisture out of the carpets and eyeballs both.  Keeps fogging down the next time the car cools to 40 degrees inside. 

I keep a towel handy to wipe the windows as I don't have the luxury model with the A/C

I yank the a/c from all of my old german cars and I live in a relatively warm summer climate. There are several reasons I remove it including: it is usually broken/leaky/needs recharging, overhaul to run r134 is a hassle, I don't like a/c, it's heavy, it wastes energy, it cleans up the engine bay, it's easy to do on non-serpentine belt cars.

I don't live in arizona or the south so I roll the windows down when it's 100*F and *** about the weather. It may also help that I work outdoors and live in a 100 year old house so I'm not accustomed to an air-conditioned cube or house.

Well, my car currently has no A/C... it just has the compressor, as the previous owner decided to rip everything else out haha.

And yeah, 'Air' is short hand for A/C round where I'm from

Mine aren't working in either of my 1.6 IDIs either.  Even though I live in sometimes sweltering central FL , I would rather put up with the discomfort, than have these old underpowered cars have to deal with the extra load.  Luckily, I don't often drive in the middle of the day and my commute is a "breeze" (few lights), so to speak
