the "real" way to go is the MKIV TDI 01M automatic starter...it's gear reduction and 2KW ...and if you add the thick MKIV TDI starter cables (power and ground) you have an unbeatable combination....I ran this setup on my 1.6td caddy and it spun over fast enough to skip the glows!!
Had 2 of 4 brushes left on my starter.. Hung a gasser starter.. :-( works good (for now) tho
A healthy gas starter shouldn't have issues starting a diesel if it's not too cold out.

This little thing is working like a champ.. Hasn't been cold yet tho. But it's.. Workin too well. My motor must be tired lol Or maybe it's that sweet f250 mod!
