runaway motor like whoa!!!

my friend just gave me a call and he had a scary story from last night. he just got done putting his intercooler on and was heading home from the shop when his motor took off. he was going about 40 so he threw it into 5th to try to kill the motor with the brakes. didnt work and the clutch started to slip at about 60 mph, he said he slammed it back into 4th and the tires just started squeeling, finally he pulled the e brake and slammed the foot brakes on and the motor stopped once he spun out. he says the intercooler was full of oil so he figures his seal went on his turbo. he pulled the head and it didnt look too bad down there but its gonna need some work. haha sounds like he was makin some serious torque. its an eco diesel and the lack of LDA had no effect considering he was juicin the motor with oil, haha.

thats intensely scary... some of us out there would actually love to be able to burn rubber in 4th gear on a diesel... :lol:

What type of oil was he running, and would he be willing to change the oil and run it again to see what performance gains your engine can obtain whilst running away, say on synthetic instead of dino oil?
Maybe burning rubber in 5th is possible folks...

yea the synthetic wouldnt burn thats for sure... whenever i use regular 15w40 my oil goes down a bit... use synthetic and i can drive the piss out of it and not lose a drop. does get real nice and dark real fast tho

burning rubber in 5th? i think the transmission would break at that point... the amount of torque would definitely rip the internals apart. either that or the engine pressure would break something inside.

I ran a gallon mixed with vegie oil in the summer in my 84 TD Jetta, never had a problem even on starting it with synthetic motor oil in the tank, I infact always saw 2-3mpg better running it in the tank than regular WMO.

I got 4th gear wheel spin in malones car while I was tuning it one time, about 4grand in 4th the tires broke loose, 37psi, mind you it was raining. It broke loose in 3rd in the dry though no problem. As soon as we get the some more fueling you will all get to see some carnage pics of some bent rods haha

if you've seen pics of the 2.5L tdi in the mk4 racer jetta that vw motorsport has you will notice the turbo oil feed live has a cable operated valve to shut the oil off to th turbo..this prevents a turbo fail run away..i've been debating we not debatiung too cheap to do this yet..i want to though..need to stash some extra cash in th cookie jar for some an line parts to convert..it makes sense..

i just looked for the pic in my hardrive.only found pics of the blue mk4 jetta with thw 2.5 the car i am speaking of is the sivlver mk4 jetta 2.5L..it most be saved on a disc..any how

Better just a turbo, then the whole engine :wink:
But rather then an oil cutoff, I have seen on many a pulling tractor an air guillotine (sp?) that shuts off all air to the motor, and no air no fire. Here is a pic of what i mean.

yeah that will work too but they are much much harder to fit and plumb the diesel pickup pulling rules require that along with bolts crossed through your exhaust and vertical exhaust etc etc..can be a pain to do and even more on a tdi not as much room there....good link

what brand synthetic are we talking about here? I'm talking about something like amsoil. Maybe the reason you saw better mileage was because it lubricated the pump better? a cetane booster would be better (and cheaper) than pouring in synthetic

to me this sounds like the best idea... no blown turbo and no blown engine

ah if the engine ran away unless its injector pump problem it was the turbo blowing so it wouldn't save the turbo because it already blew....

Well it wouldn't cost your soul, but probably the purchase price of your truck, or a little more. Last i heard they were in the 15K-20K USD range. :wink:
Now a custom billet vw pump, that might be worth a soul...
