Alternator swap

Sup y'all,

I am in need of an alternator repair on my AHU tdi, (90 amp I believe). I was hoping one of the more modern units (120amp and 150 amp?) bolt straight on? I may as well swap one of these on if im having to get this unit rebuilt/replaced. Failing that, I need to find a good alternator tech that'll rebuild this unit for more power.

Have had a search, but not found anything really, i guess info like this is out there in the forum, but buried in topics about other stuff.

anything mk3 shout be a direct swap, vr6 alts were mostly 120a,

but the 90a units are great, they usually last 10-15 years and 200k miles.

my 98 jetta tdi had a 120amp unit stock... too bad it was dead and all i coul dfind was a 90 amp unit in the time i could wait for one.. so yes there is a 120amp unit out there on thi sside of the pond at least..

Continue searching. I'm positive i've seen AHU's 120 amp alternators

According to ETKA europe got them(120 amp alts) in similar cars to what we did, at the least i recognize the 2.8, the tdi's with air(ahu,1z, pr-7e3 afn) and a crap ton of other engine codes i don't recognize! If you can live with your 90 amp unit they are easy to rebuild and very long lasting!

AL 0723 X is what you are looking for, new they are 300 ish for a bosch reman (core inc.)

yeah i did find more references with google, seems a lot of units will bolt right up in place.

Tim, when you say with air i figure you mean air con? If thats right, Ive got a unit from a 1Z with air con sat on the shelf, so ill have a look, it could be exactly what I need!!

Nathan B, nice one, in theory thats the code ill find on the spare unit i have. Ill take a look tomorrow and see. Will call a local supplier with that code and see what they want to charge me for one.

Ive got a feeling the unit ill be removing isnt a bosch, as its a different body to ALL the bosch ones ive seen. The spare I have is the same shape as the ones ive seen on the web, so it presume it is a bosch.

Will find out when I look. CHeers peeps, could have saved me a lot of hassle and monies.

For the record, the thing prompting me to replace is not an issue with power, but the bearings are noisy. After some googling I found that this isnt uncommon: but does this mean they arent about to fail, they are ONLY being noisy? Im changing the unit anyway, would be nice to know if i shold be worried or not driving meanwhile.

Most times all you need to do is replace the regulator. I get the ones from VR6 engines $6 at the pull it yourself salvage yards

The 120 Amp is on the car equiped by air conditioning
