Hey guys, I am having some issues with my 91 IDI. It first started when I snapped an alternator belt because the pulley bearing siezed.. Replaced the pulley bearing and new belt and all is well. Since then, I have this humming noise at idle that comes and goes frequently that is getting worse. Used to hear it at idle after a hour drive, now I hear it right after start up. At speed, 60 to 70 mph, the engine is louder than it was (same noise?) I can't locate anything wrong but it sounds like a bearing failing somewhere around the passenger side to back side of the engine. I cannot find it at all. Possible cause i'm thinking would be turbo bearing, timing belt tensioner, or accessory bearing? Can find it at all.
As well as this noise, I have a new oil leak that shows on the front of the oil pan and goes back. I have oil on the block at the back below the turbo.
Also, we have to do emmissions testing here in Vancouver BC and last year my opacity reading was 2.8 and this year it jumped to 18.6. Thats a huge jump when the average is 11 and max of 30. Burning oil?
Any ideas on whats going on? Is this one problem with a bearing or component that leaking oil into the intake and then burnt or???
well, im gonna saythat you have a timing belt tensioner going out, and you should fix that, or get it fixed immediately. if you dont fix it ASAP, your engine could end up needing replaced..
if the tensioner seizes up, the belt snaps, and these engines, being extremely interference engines, there is ALWAYS damage when the timing belt breaks..
sometimes as much damage as to warrant a whole engine swap. sometimes the valve heads break off, and go thru the cylinder wall (i found an exhaust valve head in a water pump housing once) or taco the rod, and break the piston.. either way, the engine would have to be replaced afterwards..
so, fix the tensioner..
