I have an 82 VW Westy with a 1.9 AAZ turbo running 15 lbs of boost.
One of the injectors is ticking so I did a crude loosen/tighten test on the feed lines to see if it changed anything. Other than the expected miss, #1 seemed to quiet it down the most so I pulled it out hoping to see something obvious. One thing that surprised me was it only had one spring. Other than that, I saw nothing wrong. It is now back in and still ticking away. (silly me didn't write down the numbers on the injector).
I plan on rebuilding all four as soon as I get my pop-tester built. Does someone here have a spare bit of flared piping and nut they'd be willing to part with?
Let me know and I'll pay shipping and whatever you feel is a fair price.
Questions:
Should I be running dual spring injectors?
What mechanically makes the ticking noise?
From what I have been reading, they should be set to pop at 155 bar for a 1.9 turbo (especially running over stock boost). Having no tester yet, I don't know what these pop at.
Can a single spring injector be shimmed to pop at 155 bar?
Any leads on where I can get good nozzles, shims and shields in the US?
Any and all responses appreciated,
Jim
Thanks for the info Mark.
This will help.
The nozzles did have two different numbers on them - wish I had written em down before I stuck them back in!
Ok - I get it now - there's a number on the body and another on the nozzle and the nozzle is the number that I need
Thanks.
Getting parts for these nozzles is going to be tough I guess.
VW dieselparts.com gave me this reply when I requested some info on their injectors. . .
AAZ is the Canadian 1.9, we do not have access to tech or parts for these. No way to buy parts for the injectors, sorry........ Try a Canadian VW Dealer.
Jim
he didn't say what the tickin noise is!
someone pointed out to me that the ticking noise is actually the diesel noise. the injector has become weak, is opening early, and is extremely advancing the timing, causing the typical sound diesels are known for
As for replacement nozzles, I have heard good things about Monarch injector nozzles. Might be worth a try.
OK,
Ill get the numbers this weekend. Hate to pull one out again as I am having to use the original heat shield each time. No leaks but I think I'm pushing it.
Anyone spare a bit 'o fuel line and a nut for a pop-tester project?
I wonder if I can get some flared tube and a metric nut at the local parts house (typically the stuff they have for hard brake lines) ?
Hmmmm.
Thanks all - this site is great.
I've had luck finding AAZ headgaskets and 1.6 nozzles at partsgeek.com... maybe they offer AAZ nozzles?
I have a set of injector lines that I bought for the same reason. PM me and I'll fish'em out in the morning... um, I can't remember if my profile says OC or Lone Pine, but I'm in Costa Mesa for a hand-off or I can mail one.
