Autometer pyro problems

My autometer pyrometer works great untill the alternator kicks in. Is this normal? do i need some sort of voltage regulator to keep the volts down for the gauge? It just goes dead as soon as you hear the glowplug relay click and the alternator kicks in.

how many volts does the alternator put out at idle? if its over 14v, then something is wrong.
