Hi Guys,
I'm looking for your advise, with the latest project I'm working on.
I recently purchased an 88 Fox wagon, which has a 1.6TD from an 85 Quantum installed.
I purchased this car as an incomplete project.
The 1.6TD has a Garrett turbo, with quite a bit of play in the shaft and while reading the former owners build thread on the vortex "north americas first Fox turbo diesel"He mentions that a lot of oil poured out of the turbo, when he removed it.
I'm trying to decide,if I should rebuild the Garrett,or replace it with a different turbo.
The engine isn't running yet,as I'm still gathering the necessary parts to complete the install.
I remember reading on this site, that the garrett was slow to spool up,but makes good boost.
This car will be my daily driver and definately NOT a hot Rod.
I'm thinking ,that maybe a smaller turbo, might be better for a daily driver-which will probably never spin over 3000-3500RPM.
Fuel economy and drivability are my goals, with this car.
Preferrably a small turbo, that bolts right in,with little or no modification ?
I need to replace the down pipe anyway,so this wouldn't be a major concearn.
Maybe there are some improvements that can be made to the Garrett ?
Honestly-this is my FIRST turbo diesel- so I'm all ears and open to your suggestions.
Maybe someone has a good used turbo, that may suite this project?
Thanks,Mike
