what do you guys think about this? I have an AAZ in my rabbit truck right now that's had a hard life (not my fault). TinTin is selling an M-tdi pump so I was wondering. Can I install an AHU longblock in place of the AAZ one that's in there now with TinTin's pump and be good to go? Use all the AAZ accessories and what not? Just add an intercooler I guess. That way I can use my existing TT exhaust and the 020 trans. I am not going to race it or do smoke shows for youtube I just want more power to tow and climb hills with 800 lbs of steel in the bed.
do a o2a conversion... even if cable and linkage stuff added.. i cannot say i race mine.. BUT its got some serious torque and pretty easy to rip in 2nd.. and depending on boost 3rd.. this is with 7" wide wheels..
AHU does drop in like aaz... so yep alt and stuff bolt right on...
I can't afford to do all that I just want a stock AHU in there with an CHD trans w/.71 5th. If I can swing it with just a long block and a pump I'll do it.
stock trans will hold just fine for daily use.
m-tdi can be detuned a little if you wish for less torque.
I have an 020 with my 1z in the cabriolet and it holds fine and hasn't died yet. I do however dislike the difference between 4th and 5th its too large and i used the .071 5th. There are times when your in the city 5th lugs the motor and 4th seems too high but otherwise its fine!
MOST 02as are longer geared than 020s. so with a tdi you can really lean the torque on them for lower rpm and better mileage at higher speeds.
Depends on the 020 and the 02A. My tdi CTN transmission is a 0.838 5th and 3.389 final. Whereas an FF. FN would be 0.71 5th and 3.89 final. the difference while cruising? The TDI transmission actually spins 30rpm higher than the FF/FN 020.
HOWEVER! the lower final is better for all the other gears.. but not so much that it will matter. All that torque in a light as hell caddy will be more than enough to keep you occupied.
like tonight out in the rain... it spins so damb easy... i just cannot see a 020 lasting long time.. and vs a ff/fn... wish my tach worked right.. but i really think it revs lower.. either way... mine will run all day long at 73mph.. hill or not..
but at min i would rebuild the 020... depending on vintage will say replace rivits with bolt kit or not (pre 84 no bolt kit required per say.. the rivits are much harder).. and ive had issues with the xzn 200ft-lb holding 5th to the main shaft commin lose when you add any torque to a old not touched tranny..
what happens is there is enough torque in 5th to break that bolt free.. then when you put in reverse it unscrews locking the tranny up and kills the engine as it forces the release bearing into the nose cone.. which also gets damaged.. pop in netural and it spins its self back in.. a really neet WTF just happened..
