My first TDI.. just one issue to figure out..
« on: September 20, 2011, 09:10:01 pm »
So I got a 2002 Jetta TDi today. Had lots of TDs and NA Diesels, but first TDI. Got it for a very reasonable price..

Only issue, very bad shudder at low RPMs when starting from a stop. You can feel the clutch pulsing while the car is shuddering. If you increase RPMs when letting out the clutch shudder is reduced. Anyone one know what's most likely? Clutch, Flywheel, dogbone?

Hey man glad to see you got a TDI! But your problem is the injector quantity. You have to fine someone with Vag-Com to hook up to your OBD2 port.
Since your car is shuddering at idle you want to reduce fuel by increasing the value. I found a how to that will explain it way better than me  ;)

It doesn't shutter when idling.. only when releasing the clutch and applying fuel to start moving from a stop. Once moving the car runs great. Car idles great as well.

Also does it do it when slowing down with the clutch depressed? 25MPH or lower

How does the intake manifold look inside? Pull off the the rubber inlet hose and take a peek.

Is it as much a running issue or the feeling of the clutch pulsing while releasing? Kinda like a clutch chatter from hot spots etc?

Does it puff smoke out the tail pipe while this is happening?

I had a similar issue with my AHU and I attributed it to a air in the fuel issue after sitting.. Does it do it every single time you start from a stop? Or just after the car has sat for a while?

Every single time when starting from a stop it shutters like mad. Car can be hot, cold, doesn't matted. Doesn't happen when slowing down. No smoke. Just a shutter from stop to moving when releasing the clutch and a little shutter when going into second, unless you increase RPMs when starting from stop or switching into second gear. Then no shutter. Hmm..

I'm 99.9% convinced it's the clutch or flywheel.. I bought a clutch kit with the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, everything so I'm just going to swap it out when I get time and update you guys.

My money is on the clutch and PP being the problem.  But nice to know all the other possibilities now isn't it?

Very nice, thanks guys. Will update. One other thing.. I posted in Troubleshooting..

No heat!! Ahhh, almost winter! Hot water to and from heater core, no water on floor. No matter where you turn the heat dial the temp blowing stays the same. Gahh...

If this thing has a flap motor I was thinking that, but I'm not sure if it does.. Ideas?

Is the valve that opens the flow of water to the core working?  Or is it not secure at the valve and when you flip the lever for heat it just moves the cable to the side and doesn't actually open the valve.  Not familiar with many trap door heaters.  Most all my cars have not had A/C or problems when they did.

When I worked in an A/C install business the cables would come off and the heat would be on at the same time the A/C but that was back before all this fancy temp control stuff came into being.

Both hoses could be hot but the actual flow through the core is dependent on the water actually flowing not just getting up to the valve and return hose from the engine side.

Now it's only blowing hot. I did notice some leaking, so I have a new heater core I'm throwing in then I'll figure out the rest of the problems.

This weekend swapped the Saches flywheel, clutch and pp for a new Valeo clutch kit with SMF. What a wrestling match!

I only had a cherry picker and a floor jack so engine supported by cherry picker transmission by floor jack, didn't remove the exhaust downpipe and push out the engine or remove the passenger drive axle flange so I wrestled with the tranny for quite some time. But all done, probably took longer then it should have but never done one before.

But, she runs beautiful now. Love it!

How bad did the PP and clutch plate surfaces look?  My guess it either very worn or very uneven wear.  Gummy even.
