AAZ oil consumption / overfill?
« on: September 18, 2011, 03:20:50 pm »
I have an AAZ in A Westy and well life is just fine.   I do have a question around oil consumption.

The engine is relatively new <100k miles, performance and everything fine.

It does 'use' a bit of oil.  On the last trip I replaced about a quart (litre) fro every 2500 miles - which is ok by me, but I was wondering if it is because I am overfilling the sump.

The Westy setup is very difficult to get a good oil level reading and the sump has an additional gasket so I know the oil capasity will be above the standard 1.6na level of 4 quarts (litres).  I have run it at about 4.5 to 4.75 quarts just to be 'safe'.  I wonder if all I am doing is blowing out the excess and replacing it every time?

Any ideas

If you overfill, you will definitely loose oil but generally it'll leak rather than burn.  It's definitely NOT a good idea.

That said, a full oil change with a new filter takes 4.5L on my 1.6TD to fill things to the proper mark.  I know the Vanagon oil pan is different though.
