Why do you want a hunting idle exactly? To sound cool? I don't quite get it.
How do they get the Cummins to hunt? They utilize a Bosch vertilliere (sp?) pump same as we do.
To get cummins to hunt they just put bigger injector lines them. But i think that is bad because its not getting fuel for a split second.
its that, and the fact that the governor fly weights are usually modified, and that doesnt help out either. but yes, alot of it has to do with going OVER SIZE on the injector lines..

been doing some thinking, and some more thinking.. and from the way i understand things, is that you MIGHT be able to make your pump lope with a SOFTER idle spring.. i dunno how soft you would want to go tho.
this is all IN THEORY.. theres no way im taking my governor apart to try it, someone else that ACTUALLY LIKES the sound of a crappy governor can try it out and report back if they want..

instead of screwing with the pump, if you were really keen on it you could use a flasher relay to power the fuel solenoid on the pump. you'd just need a micro switch to switch it over when the throttle lever was in the idle position. That way you could even turn it off when you go crazy.

I put a non split shot computer on a truck with split shots, and startup sounds just like this....

softer VS harder spring
what would be the behaviour of the idle?

softer spring would make the idle spring compress too much, then let it off, causing the engine to hunt..
stiffer spring would probably be no different.. the late pumps dont even have an idle spring, just a shim.. but, the late pumps have accomodations for the idle spring still, its just not there.

what is a non split shot computer?
Some Powerstrokes and TDIs have 2 stage injectors that do 2 squirts per event(AKA split shot), it burns cleaner and a little quieter.
When I swapped the truck to manual transmission, I used a manual trans computer from a truck that had single stage injectors.

any ideas on what type of spring?
i dont have idle spring on the governor...

well, i would find a idle spring, and go from there..
since im not even interested in this thread really, im not going to be the one fooling with his pump to figure this out..
take the idle spring, measure it.. (spring rate, diameter, length) and go from there..
start installing progressively softer idle springs till you get the crappy idle you so desire..

you want your diesel to hunt..
the only time it hunts if you didnt make it do it, is if something is messed up, and it idles crappy..
if there were some REASON for the engine to lope like that, like from huge injector lines, or a DELETED governor, then i could see the loping..
but on a stock engine, its just going to sound like hell..
the only engine that should be loping, are cold 7.3's and Jimmys..
thats just my take on it atleast.. i like smooth idle on ALL my rigs.. even the gassers.
theres too many retards on the roads around here, from april to october, all the speed limit sighs mean nothing. you just go along at 20-30 mph because nobody knows how to drive.. sometimes you go alot slower than that even.. there were hundreds of times this year that i had to idle along in first gear for miles.. i would be wanting to kill my car after about 500 yards of it loping/bucking..
anyhow.. to each there own.. it doesnt affect me how crappy your car idles. go for it, start putting soft idle springs in your pump. some spring will give you the desired crappy idle characteristics.
i hate living at the beach..

You can move to McMinville and really have a traffic problem. I think I would stay where you are. Isn't it only during tourist season that the traffic sucks like that?
Move South of Florence, that is where it is just right.
