hi
i just love the sound of that on diesels, and no,my passat doesent have 75hp so it moves fairly well(for the ones that will say is goofy to have that on a slow car).
i think that there is more people interested in this, from reading other topics i can see that, so lets try to talk what can be done to achieve this and still have a good working order pump(off idle).
a friend of mine had this issue and it turned out to be a malfunction delivery valve.
knowing the function of the DV what can cause idle to lope?
and what about governor springs ?
changing the strength of the idle spring would have what benhavior?
i read on other topic(mtdi pumps related) that changing the position of the shaft where the flyweights atatch could lead to more fuel due to less intervention of the governor but also erratic idle.
if erratic idle is another word for lope or hunting idle that would be great, and if more fuel would be other effect that great...
any pump builder ou there that had messes with this setting that can scheme in and debate this?

Thicken your fuel till the idle compensation can't happen fast enough

but that would increase pump pressure and timing beyond safe values.
if the trick is to make the idle spring not to act fast enough would changing idle spring strength achive that?

the only reasons pumps hunt at idle, is because of a ill-adjusted governor..
the first hunting diesels were the detroits.. and you could make them idle smooth as silk if you knew how to adjust the governor buffers right..
the 16V92 that AF DICK has in there land speed racer, it has 4 super chargers, 4 sets of compound turbos... starts and idles quite smooth.
me, personally, i love that our pumps idle smooth.. take a car with hunting idle, and put it in a slow moving traffic jam.. you will want your smooth idle back in a right hurry..

Yah, I like the ability to crawl along in gear at idle smoothly.

I think leaks in the IP and elsewhere in the engine can also cause a hunting idle. I replaced all leaky seals in my IP and did a head gasket job a month ago and the idle is now nice and steady.

i dont have the problem of cruising at idle,so there wont be any driving issue.
assuming that a malfunctioning governor what can be done to achieve that?
was hoping that more experienced on diesel pump build freaks help a bit...

the pump wizards know how to set the governors right.. so there wont be a hunting idle.

Why do you want a hunting idle exactly? To sound cool? I don't quite get it.
How do they get the Cummins to hunt? They utilize a Bosch vertilliere (sp?) pump same as we do.

To get cummins to hunt they just put bigger injector lines them. But i think that is bad because its not getting fuel for a split second.

i want the idle like that because i like the sound.
the same way people like to hear the turbo on straigh pipes,or some like the WG discharge to atmosphere.
if someone know hot to set it right,is very possible to know very well how it works and then also know how to make it lope.

Agreed ^^^ I like to hear the sound also! I think it would be kinda tough to get our IDI's to lope. I wish someone who knew these pumps really good would chime in

I had to do research to figure out what we are talking about, and I LIKE It. Yesss how do we get that??? I I have a late model mustang that has a pretty significant cam that does this too
