Changing clutch - out-put shaft came out of tranny
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:40:03 pm »
I am changing the clutch on my 82 Vanagon with a 1.9 AAZ.
the motor is staying in and the transmission is coming out.
I was having a tougher time than I should have and realized that the output shaft from the transmission stayed in the clutch!

Is this going to be a problem or can I just stick it back in to the transmission?
My guess is that there should be a retaining clip or something to hold it in.

Any help appreciated.

Just an update - I slipped the shaft back in and it feels fine.
It still bugs me though and I'd like an expert opinion if someone wants to chime in.

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

I agree
I have a snapshot of the shaft and the clutch but I don't know how to post them.
There is a machined groove in the splines on the transmission end but one edge (closest to the end of the shaft) has a heavy chamfer all the way to the bottom of the groove. It doesn't look like it would hold a snap ring very well
