2011 CR TDI for $100
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:58:36 pm »
Yep. Deal of the century. I'll be picking up a 2011 VW CR TDI long block for $100. Its got 11k miles on it. It just had its first oil change and the owner did not like the noises it was making, so they had it swaped out for a new one (customer Pay). So the dealer performed the exchange and decided to give it to the local wrecker for scrap. The scraper contacted my budy who owns a local shop to see if they would be interested in it. He said no but then he contacted me. Duh, yes!.

So I went down and pulled the VC and was expecting damage but saw a beautiful new engine top end. No wear, damage, no over heating of parts, galling of cam lobs, nothing. So on to the pulling the pan to see the real damage. Nothing again!!! Its got to be too good to be true. Nothing is wrong with the naked eye.
The only way to know for sure is to pull off rod caps and main caps, but for $100, I'd be willing to take that gamble.

Plus not to forget, a 2011 2.5L with 6k miles for $150 with the same story, customer didn't like the way it sounded.

So you tell me. Is it worth the $250 to make maybe $1000?

As I'm sure you're aware, the blocks aren't the issue on the new CR. It's the high pressure lift pumps. I'm sure you'll make your money back, but I wouldn't trust the fuel system. Someone could have run gas thru it, in which case, that part of the motor is worthless.

Absolutely not worth it.   Please arrange to ship them to me, I'll pay the $250 and prevent you from making a horrible mistake.  ;)

(I'm jealous.  But hey, great to see a member here get such a great deal.)

Wow, that's a steal!  You will never lose money on that engine.  I'll bet the head alone is worth at least $500.

You said long block, so I assume you don't have the turbo.  If you go about half way down on this page http://www.vwparts.com/parts-outlet-center/?pg=4 you'll see new turbos for this engine for $400 from your local VW dealer.  Probably closer to $250-$300 through 1stvwparts.com or genuinevwaudiparts.com.

Oh dang. How hard is it to get one running on standalone? *evil smirk*

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

The power potential with these CR engines is incredible. With only a chip tune & straight exhaust pushing 170whp and 300wheel torque, it makes this much smoke (no filter in the exhaust): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ajR6ZTKEnQ
Imagine how much money or work it would take to build a IDI or older TDI engine to the same HP/TQ while keeping it near smoke-free. Not to mention that the more hardware mods you do a TDI, the more likely you'll have issues.

It'll be awesome fast in a MK2 or a G3F kit car that weighs ~800lbs less than a MK4! Drop in larger injectors and a larger turbo and it might get crazy.

Here's another video of a CR TDI in 100F Texas heat (this is about as smoky as it can get with stock turbo @ 170whp): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_hyRwRaPHg

Cheers,
Mark

There's a guy on tdiclub building a 450hp car based on this engine. Of course it uses many custom parts including a CP3 HPFP, compound vnt turbos and stand-alone ecu.

So I got the diesel and 5 cylinder engines. I also talked with the supplier and got the inside scoup.
The diesel engines oil pan was struck  with a rock. Of course it lost all its oil. The owner pulled over asap.

So I cracked the pan again, only after the supplier told me they put a new one on.  ::)
I pulled off a main cap and it looked great. Then a rod cap. Poop  :(. It looks like the bearing smeared off onto the crank jurnal. I think it can be polished off with out grinding.

I pulled the head off to look at the cylinder walls. #4 has a light, small scuff that can't be felt with a finger nail. Thats it for the cylinder walls.

So I'm going to find out how much bolts and bearings will cost and oil pump and go from there.

The 5 cylinder has a small hole in the base of the block. #1 piston oil squirter let go and tumble polished the lower engine, so the head is going up for sale.
