I asked this same question couple of years ago to try to figure out what size air filter to use on my 1Y. Never got an answer. I did some digging on sites which sold those engines as generators and water pumps ,with limited information . In the end going from 2" to 2.5 " runners from the inlet of the air filter to the intake manifold really woke that engine up

Depends on your boost level and maximum RPM.
If you go here:
http://www.not2fast.com/turbo/glossary/turbo_calc.shtml
And then fill in the relevant details (your max boost, max RPM, bore/stroke, etc) it will tell you how many CFM you need.

i dont think it really matters with air filter size.. you cant really go too big.
if it LOOKS too small to you, then it probably is..

i am not talking air filter size, just want to know how much boost to run.
dont want to stress the engine and be on the efficient zone of the turbo.

I think an egt gauge will give you more real info regarding how much boost, because it depends on fueling more than the potential cfm of the motor.
thats really the whole idea of boost. to force more cfm than it was capable of..

if its the 48 trim i think it is, i would say around 20-25psi. looks like a good turbo for that boost range

my guess would be A/R 45 as its the turbo that came on the audi 2.5 tdi 150hp.
my plan is to run the most efficient boost that the turbo can produce, and then tune the pump to match it.
right now i have a 1.6 pump with stock 9mm head and with the turbo at 1bar i only smoke greyish at full pedal.lots of smoke but grey so i think i still have room for more fuel, even at 1 bar.
have to replace the pump had as the pump is maxxed out and governor mod included.
or ,on another note,is the smoke other issue?
i feel ceptical about the 1.6 pump with 1.9 injectors, and the pump also seems to leak a bit on the head side, but nothing major.
timing is set at 1.00 or 1.05,can recall for sure, and it starts fine on cold, hot whatever.
just feel a little plin plin on idle and light accelaration.other situations is fine so i dont messed with it yet.
i have a spare 1.9 ecodiesel pump, but installed the 1.6 because i dont like the dual spring assembly on the accelarator shaft...

Some years ago I had 150hp 2,5 V6 TDI turbo with 1,6. I wanted to run ~1,5-1,6bar max. But the more I turned fueling up, higher the boost went. With my pump maxxed out, boost rised to 1,9bars vanes full open. Dynoed 173hp/280nm with that setting, torque could have been adjusted to lower rpm by vane settings. I liked it a lot, very nice turbo for dailydriver

thanks mjf.
you were controling the vanes just by a WG pressure can right?mine is that way but i dont like it much as its only good or for cruising or max boost, when accelarating the car will go better when vanes opens at 1 bar,but with half throtle boost will go down a bit after and at wot boost wont go more than 1.1/1.2 so how can you get that pressure?i have 9mm head still but going 11mm.
the grey smoke is what i think?
thanks

You are right, I had just boost pressure can controlling. Simple, but not that good. I had 10mm pump with that setup.
