If money's tight, I'd just hammer the surfaces flat, sand off any flaky bits,  put in a new cup and reassemble.

theres no way i would do that unless the new cup fit tight in the head, and i bet it wont fit tight, being that the old cup was already loose in there for lots of miles..

if the cup dont fit right, it will do the same thing again in short order..
Agreed never leave a loose cup loose. Assuming head flesh still there round the cup [which didn't fall out unless reinserted by victim] then swaging of the head around the circumference, would tighten a new [old reclaimed]cup.

It could be a valve is bent and not sealing, but just because it looks like Bagdad after the bombing, doesn't mean that life won't crawl out.  After all the engine doesn't care what it looks like, it just wants to burn diesel ;D

I bet a whole cup will be tight to fit.  If you're a poor student, or just on a tight budget, I'd at least consider it, after all these engines are of simple sensor free design, a bit like  Briggs and Stratton early stuff. After all what does it take, a few hours, a $20 gasket... heck the old gasket didn't leak, did it :o What can happen? Nothing, or you mark up your piston... The old cup was cracked wasn't it?

I suppose that being as this is the GTD site and your block is wearing studs, this'll be driven to it's limit. so yeah, on second thoughts, get a new head and piston ;D

Sorry it happened to you. Thanks for sharing the damage, and the little snippit of info that the injector wasn't to blame. Some like to blame injectors for everything :P

Well I sucessfully swapped a brand new aaz head onto it but I managed to put a hole in the transmission from dropping a bolt into the clutch housing  >:( >:( >:(
The good news is I made it home, the bad news is it leaked all the gear oil all over my driveway.

well, now your gonna need a new trans.. no fixing the old one.
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Agreed.
Shame you didn't have a Quantum; dropping a bolt into the clutch area and it just falls out again ;D
You better get the 3rd piece of bad luck out of the way before you do much more driving ;)
