Technical acronyms frequently used on the GTD Board:
-basics-
GTD = Gran Turismo Diesel. A sporty Diesel car offering from Volkswagen.
IDI = Indirect Injection. This combustion chamber design is used in the prechamber or "swirl chamber" diesel engines used by VW before TDIs. Other automotive diesel manufacturers such as mercedes also have Indirect Injection diesels.
DI = Direct Injection. This combustion chamber design is used on most commercial diesel trucks (and starting in the 90's, on some autmotive applications.)
TD = Turbo-Diesel
-car or engine parts-
VNT = Variable Nozzle Turbocharger, also known as variable-vane turbo.
IC = Intercooler
ECU = Engine Control Unit, electronic
IP = Injection Pump
LDA = "LadeDruckabhangiger (vollast)Anschlag" (german translation), the boost pressure enrichment device found on mechanically controlled turbo-diesel injection pumps
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation
-characteristics and features-
CR = Compression Ratio, or Common Rail.
NA = Naturally Aspirated, or North American
VE = Volumetric Efficiency. A percentage measure of how efficient an engine is at ingesting air. Not to be confused with the "Bosch VE" type fuel injection pump used on our motors.
EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature
TDC = Top Dead Center
BDC = Bottom Dead Center
WHP = Wheel horsepower. Typically lower than crankshaft horsepower because of friction/etc. losses in the drivetrain between the engine and wheels.
MAF = Mass Airflow. A sensor measuring this is usually found in electronically controlled diesels.
MAP = (intake) Manifold Absolute Pressure. A sensor measuring this is usually found in electronically controlled diesels.
-fuels-
B100 = Biodiesel, 100%. Biodiesel is a fairly strong solvent and can cause original fuel injection pumps to leak fuel, in older VW diesels (IDIs).
B20 = Biodiesel, 20% mixed with 80% petroleum diesel
LSD = Low Sulfur Diesel
SVO = Straight Vegetable Oil. Usually recycled cooking oil or grease.
WVO = Waste Vegetable Oil.
ULSD = Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. Mandated in North America around 2006-2007. Result is cleaner emissions and less visible exhaust smoke. Many older diesel fuel injection pumps start leaking, possibly from ULSD's lower lubrication.
-engine names-
PD = "Pumpe Düse" (german translation), means unit injector.
TDI = VW's brand name for their Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel motor.
SDI = "Suck" Direct Injection, loosely translated. A naturally aspirated form of VW's direct injection diesel motor.
TDI-M = TDI with Mechanically controlled fuel injection
1.5D, 1.5NA or 1.5lNA = 1.5 liter Naturally Aspirated IDI VW Diesel engine
1.6D, 1.6NA or 1.6lNA = 1.6 liter Naturally Aspirated IDI VW Diesel engine
1.6TD or 1.6lTD = 1.6 liter Turbo-Diesel IDI VW engine
1.9D, 1.9NA or 1.9lNA = 1.9 liter Naturally Aspirated IDI VW Diesel engine
1.9TD or 1.9lTD = 1.9 liter Turbo-Diesel IDI VW engine. Sometimes referred to by its engine code: "AAZ"
D24 = Diesel 2.4 liter 6 cylinder IDI Diesel Volvo motor, manufactured by VW.
D24T = Diesel 2.4 liter Turbocharged 6 cylinder IDI Volvo motor, manufactured by VW.
300D = 3.0L 5 cylinder Mercedes Benz motor, either Naturally Aspirated or turbocharged.
-general forum acronyms-
AFAIK = As Far As I Know
ICE = Internal Combustion Engine, or In-Car Entertainment
IIRC = If I Recall Correctly
PM = Private Message
PU = Pick Up (Truck)
WOT = Wide Open Throttle (pedal to the floor)
