remove oil cooler?

Could there be any problems caused from removing the oil cooler?

I have a AAZ in a rock crawler (not finished yet) the engine mount is between the water pump and oil cooler, water lines are pushed up against the engine mount. Was thinking about removing the oil cooler to free up space, and cut down on the amount of coolant lines. If I burn more than 5 gallons of fuel a trip out I will be supprised. But yes the engine will get a workout.

Depending on your turbo, I would water cool your turbo, and remove the oil cooler.. or use a sandwich plate and use a remote oil cooler, that way you can run the coolant lines off the other side of the flange.

Like nathen b says, you can take it off, but i would seriously think about installing a plate heater/cooler in it's place. Unless you do 2 things- warm the engine properly before pushing it, and installing an oil cooler

I removed the stock oil cooler for an aftermarket one i put infront of the radiator. Cicumstances led to it being removed so i just looped a stainless steel line in a jam and i didn't notice any changes on my oil temp gauge except for at most (in the rocky mountains) a 15-25F increase - but the coolant also gained 10 centigrade which would have contributed.

I have a 1.6N/A with a turbo. No oil cooler, side of the head blocked off (recirculates in the front). I drive it hard. Lots of boost...lots of egt. My fan cycles on and off a good amount but it never gets to hot. Then again...the fan is from a Passat B5 welded into a mk1 shroud and blows like a typhoon.

you should (i'm in the process of buying one to check) be able to fit a mk1 gti oil filter head, and swap out the mk2 one on your block... this then gives you a external oil to air cooler, that opens up at 90°c

in 27° centrigrade weather we get approx 85 of so degrees F my car with a VNT 15 runs about 210° with a gti filter adapter and large nascar style aluminum oil cooler in front of the car below the rad.  If I push it hard it will get over 220° with amsoil deisel oil.  If you take it off I would suggest a real good synthetic oil redline or something like it and oil changes often.

Well my AAZ isn't in a rock crawler, but it is in a 4x4, and you REALLY do need an oil cooler. I've upgraded to a 19 row Mocal, and can still see high oil temps at low speeds. A small fan wouldn't go amiss.

What Radiator are you planning? Is this a full bodied rock crawler, or tube frame?

Thanks for all the replys.  I think I might try and keep it for now. I mostly wanted to simplify all the hoses. I was thinking about a air cooler but already have the radiator, intercooler, and steering cooler to deal with.

I'm going to be running a griffin double pass Radiator. It's in a custom tube chassis, 4 link front and rear, chevy 1 ton axles, motor is backed by a toyota 5 speed with double low cases. I'll have to start a build thread since I could use help on other stuff also. I need to move the powersteering pump around were the alt. was.  then move the alt. to the other side of the engine. Didn't know if there was stock brackets for this out there? looks easy to make though.

I'm assuming you've come across Acme adapters in Oregon? They sell adapters and a mount to fit a GM alt to the 'back' of the engine? plus VW to Toy adapters.

I knew of them for the VW-toy adapter. I made my own it goes to the bottom of toy bell.  I'll have to check out the alt. bracket.  I was checking it out, and it looks like I can make everything easy. I'm going to look for a water pump, and power steering serpintine pullys first.

You can also use a Volvo (gas) oil-air cooler adapter, but it helps to get the mounting nipple from the Volvo at the same time.
