new guy - hp improvements?

Hey. just joined up after hearing about this place on another forum. I need some advice on increasing hp to a 1.6TD from a jetta. I've searched the forum and I think I know what to do, but my application is slightly different from most of folks here.

I'm putting a 1.6TD into a suzuki sidekick, 4wd, 4dr. I think the stock setup of the 1.6TD will be slightly underpowered for this small SUV, even if its not I'd still like to up the hp. Ideally I'd like to see 80-90hp, I don't think the stock kick tranny can take much more. From what I've read 80-90 hp is not unreasonable.

So... here's what I think I can do to get there. Add intercooler, egt boost, increase fuel (pump screw adjustment), 2.5" exhaust, adj timing to 1 to 1.05mm, manual boost and maybe adj the governor. I'm also may see about the "giles" performance pump upgrade (cost will be a factor). Oh I took most of these ideas from the main page, "more power" topic.

My questions are will these mods get me to 80-90hp? This rig will mostly be a daily driver with occasional offroad use, will these mods cause any problems offroad?

Here in Europe there are stock 1.6TD+IC (RA/SB) engines with 80hp. The main differences from the 70hp JR/MF are: the existence of an intercooler (it's not even a FMIC), specific injector nozzles, proper pump tuning and the turbo is smaller!
So you can take 80hp very easily from a 1.6TD. 90 shall not be that difficult too.
But well, I'm by no means an expert here. Although I can assure you that target range of power is very reasonable.  :wink:

I see you're in Denver.  Smoke is going to be a problem at your home altitude.  And you have to pass emissions test too.  But when I lived in Colorado Springs and working in Woodland Park (el. 8500 ft) I was able to tune my car up quite a bit.  It smoked a little and I had to keep my foot out of it at times to not smoke.  But it passed the emissions test just fine.  

I suspect that a big intercooler will be a very good choice to densify the intake air and reduce smoke.  Also, consider some turbo mods to increase pressure and flow.  The goal is to get as much O2 in the cyl as possible or you'll smoke like a chimney.  Of couse you can always turn down the fueling prior to the emisions test on the dyno.  I didn't becuase I wanted to see the numbers...  

I'm not sure if you'll acomplish 80 to 90 hp, but whatever you do squeeze out of it, I think you'll be satisfied.  And I highly recomend the EGT gage.  I discovered that it was real easy to go into the red.

Actually, I'm very satisfied with my Quantum with only 1 "power mod";  fuel screw adjustment.  Other things I've done are std tune up stuff, or extras (like the egt).

hey your doing the same thing as me! How far along are you on the swap? I am in the process of getting my diesel motor running before the swap begins. I think stock for stock the diesel will be OK not great my biggest problem with the stock kick motor is it doesn't make any torque. I am shooting for around 90 HP (maybe more after I get it all swapped over.)

How are you going to handle Power steering? Also do you have AC?

I'm not very far along. I have the engine pulled from the kick, that's it. The 1.6TD is on its way, I had some problems with the first engine I got a hold of, so I had to get a different one. Its actually going to work out better. Anyway, started a new job so I haven't had much time to actually do any work.

I plan on doing the real work in March. I'm going to order the Acme kit, which should have pretty good instructions. Hopefully I can it up and running by the end of March.

Power steering, I'm pretty sure you can use the stock power steering pump.

I don't have A/C, but the guys at Acme said to use the kick A/C. The VW A/C is on the wrong side of the engine.

I'd like to do all my engine tweeking before I put it in the kick.
