looking at this mk1 (L version)..... thoughts?

here is the add... whats an "L version"


hello i own a 1982 vw rabbit 2door hatch
it is a 4 speed with 159xxxxxx.
is the diesel L version, the car starts right up with no problems and drives better then most rabbis.
never had a problem with the car. it is my daily driver so it has no problem starting up anytime and going the distance.
the clutch is in great condition so is the tranny.
the body in great shape as you can see. paint is about two months old,
tires and rims in good condition.

as many rabbits this age the interior is no the best but can be easily fixed, this vw are one of the easiest car to work on simple and plenty of space.
i have the front bumper but thinks looks better without it.
please do your research on these models before you come take a look at it, these cars were not made to race or go fast. it is a money saving machine tho.

please dont email me or call me trying to low ball me, i know what this cars are worth specially the diesel ones. rare and in high demand, can be easily converted in to a veggier burner.
this is a classis and a joy to drive.

My appologies I thought you were selling it, and just getting a little extra advertising.
What to look for?
Rust in strut carriers, rust in areas by window wipers.

Rusted  brake pipes, rusted seat mounting area., door bottoms, feel under wheel arches for padding, general condition of  water pipes.

If it's been road worthy recently then engine probably fine.
Drive at full lock in a carpark, and listen/feel for knocking, and play in steering. 

Look for weld traces around the parts where the sides meet the chassis.
Check that each door fits the hole, and that all four wheels are centred or at least paired in the way they sit in the wheel arches.

C = Custom, bottom of the line
L = second trim package from the bottom of the line. just a bit better than Custom trim.
LX = luxury package, top of the line on the earlier mk1's, but not as optioned out as the GL

then in 83 or 84 they came out with the:

GL = top of the line, lots of options, pretty much decked out.

caddys came as lx, rabbits were ls.  both were about the same thing it depended on the options tho.  a friend of mine has a gasser rabbit gl with power steering but no ac, and a sun roof.  and it came that way, really odd.  it doesn't have the nicer seats or interior like my car does(my car is an ls).  mine is really decked out, 8 track, chrome everything, ac, wood trimed panels, and velvetty seats, no ps or sun roof tho.

Back to the OP's question, I would definitely take a look at it. If he knows the value of it, he should post a price. I hate when people don't offer at least a ballpark price. If it's as nice as he says, I would expect around $2000.

2K may be 1000 to high.  There were only shots of the outside.  The engine compartment and the interior are where the problems really are on these cars and in AZ I would expect sun damage on the inside.  So, I would be asking for more visuals before offering up a price. But you did give him some really good pointers on what to look for.  I would look on the local Craigslist for similar vehicles and use that as a market value comparison pricing method.  In lieu of anything better.  

It is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay.  When it comes to used cars it is not a sellers market per se.  Unless you truly have a one of a kind car.

Oh I just saw the $3000! Yes that guy is definitely smoking something. For $3k I would expect a recently rebuilt 1.6td with zero rust and many new parts.

It also says new paint 2 months old. I would want to see what it looked like before. He could have covered a bunch of junk and it not been fixed right. I wouldn't pay someone to paint and then get rid of it and I wouldn't paint it myself and get rid of it.
I also wouldn't pay anywhere near that much for an MK1 rabbit in any condition. But that is just me.

I think the problem on price is that in that listed area there are some pretty pricy cars and caddys.  6K for one Caddy that has mostly been towed but still with 175K miles.  Another Caddy with 148K miles is only a third of that.  A Bargin?  Can't say from the pics.  So this seller is just using the market price and the market is oversold.  I would look at some of the others available.  This one is looking fishy.

you really have to see it and drive it to know what its worth.  it looks like over spray on the bumper shocks, good sign of a ***ty paint job.  if it has a nice interior, drives perfect, doesn't seem to leak anything, and has decent paint, with only minor things wrong with it, i don't think 3k is a bad price, but i bet its not a 3000 dollar car honestly.
