Possible VNT actuator?
« on: July 30, 2011, 10:47:42 pm »
I picked these up at a local swap meet. One is  pressure activated with an internal return spring, the otheres either vaccum or pressure activated but have little adjustable bleeder/tension valves on each end.

Tell if any of these would be a worthy actuator for a manual VNT controller with either boost and or EMP?

Some of the actuators have wiring that is used for determin possisioning of the internal piston.

I talked to the guy on the 4bt forum who started to use this. It wasn't good news for me. He said that after time the emp side would gunk up with soot. It didn't take long to replace, but his idea was to have a functional controller. He didn't want to have it gunk up 1/2 way through a drive to somewhere and have to get out and fix it in decent clothes. He said he used all kinds of filters trying to make it work and it just wouldn't the way he wanted it to.
I am wondering if you couldn't isolate the emp and run an inert gas or fluid into the emp side and then it would work flawlessly.

thats a good idea, but how would it work haha.

i wonder if theres some way u could just have a point where there is a diaphragm, and one side of the diaphragm is the exhaust pressure and on the other side is the inert gas or regular air, and then the regular air side goes to the  actuator.   like a 1:1 diaphragm kind of deal.

That is what I was thinking. Summit sells a pressure deal that allows you to run manual gauges in and has an inert oil/water/something in it to hook to your gauge end. That way no hot engine oil/antifreeze ever gets in the cab. That is what gave me the idea.

did u tell the 4bt guy haha, that electronic kit solution someone had posted looked pretty sweet as well.  it was programmable based on boost and throttle position right.  and i don't mean regcheesemans, although his was awesome

No, he has displacement and therefore was able to laugh at me and run a big turbo instead. Lord Verminaard is one of the guys working on one that takes readings off of a ton of stuff. I hope to have one.
