loud noise and loss of power?
« on: July 28, 2011, 09:37:22 pm »
I know, but this will not be an easy one ;) Today on my way home, I was getting on the freeway, 1st gear pull to 5600, put in 2nd, pull to 5600, loud noise from engine. Major loss of power. I thought I lost a charge pipe connection. I went easy until I got on the freeway as everything felt fine. No other noises. No change in EGT from normal, oil temp was normal. Everything felt just fine. power was back and no anomaly since. It has been 18 miles since the 'incident'. This is frankenmotor with a gt2056. It does surge between 3200 and 4k after that it pulls jsut fine. Yes, I kept my foot in it through the surging (Iknow, I know).

any ideas what it could have been? Floating camplate? I have never experienced a floating camplate so maybe someone here has and can describe it?

I would pull off the the turbo inlet to check for some turbo compressor damage.

I have a Giles super pump that I have ran over 6k RPM a few time and have had no ill effects or noises. But that might be the difference between my pump and yours.

I would think that if a cam plate would skip/float, that the plunger keyway would have sheared off in the process.

There are no strange noises since the 'incident'. the car runs just as it did before the 'incident'. I agree, if the pump did some weird shít, it would have continued. But everything seems normal. I will check the turbo inlet tomorrow. The worst part is that I have a Giles pump for this car and I keep meaning to send it to him, but I keep forgetting :banghead: I know his pump would help quite a bit. Probably not remove the inefficiency of the engine that causes the surging, but it might help due to timing and such. I will post up tomorrow if I find anything. I might not have time to look at it though until Monday..

Well, drove it to work this morning. Everything was just fine. No wierd noises or anything. Looked at the turbo inlet and it looks just fine. No evidence of damage at all. Is it possible that the turbo stalled and caused the noise/power loss? I know that sounds kinda wierd to ask if it 'stalled' but considering the surging, I thought I would guess at that..

How's your air filter? Maybe you had a bird strike!

Air cleaner looks fine. It has a K&N oval filter.

Kinda sounds like a fuel restriction to me. I had this happen last month. My supply tube had managed to get pinched and was allowing the fuel through a hole smaller than your average threading needle... I don't even know how it was running... Lmao

I would expect to see lots of blood in the compressor housing if that was the case Lol!

Hmm this is a good suggestion. I am using the intank lift pump that the car came with. So maybe something is going awry with that.. This would explain the symptoms.

LOL... Kinda meant a varmint being struck by the vehicle, not ingested by it.  :D
