I am possibly getting a vnt15 (gt1749va) for my rabbit 1.6. I have been doing research on vane control but I am still a bit confused. I understand the vanes are moved by a vacuum canister. Could you just hook up the vacuum canister to the vacuum pump? I would think that as the pump builds vacuum while accelerating, it would open the vanes to control boost. Also I have heard that there is some sort of set screw for the vanes that you can use to control max boost, is that right? Im new to the vnt turbo stuff and its all a bit confusing. I know alot of people flip the vac can so it will use boost to control the vanes instead of vacuum. Or should I just run the vanes fully open? What kind of boost would I get just running them open all the time? Thanks.

:)You're correct. On a TDi - where these turbos come from the vane control was controlled by vacuum and the vacuum was controlled, I assume, by the ecu. That helps alot, thank you. So what would happen if I just hooked the vac can up directly to the vac pump and that was it? Does the vacuum pressure not vary enough for full range of vane movement?

I've never tried it, but I did read or see somewhere that was the case. You would need some valve or other device, again likely controlled by the throttle or other, to vary the vacuum. Someone, I don't remember who, also made an electronic control.
