downpipe ?'s (now with photo)
« on: July 10, 2011, 05:33:53 pm »
yessss i have decided to hack my motor mount to make room for the vnt15 :( i got a new-to-me one from the junkyard today. if the damn thing snaps, well then i'll have to figure something else out (altho i read somewhere that is was the 3rd track pass that borked someone else's [after he cut his,] and i'll be far from track passes)

so i am having a hard time finding downpipes for the vnt 15. did it come from a gasser? what year make and model should i search for? i don't even know what car this thing came off of.
found it's from alh tdi jetta, bettle, golf. finding a sub $1,000 downpipe is becoming a tax. and i don't wanna push my local exhaust shop thru such a fab they will cry.. i just need a pipe that the exhaust shop can attach a long pipe to

and will a 1986 fox intake manifold work on my head? what about the 2.0 intakes i can find tons of those. or a 1.6 gasser? i can get my hands on 2 of those intakes. of the three which one should i pick? the fox appears to be quite easier to remove.

after that i'm down to oil lines.. and then it's go time. all for $60 (+ the cost of this downpipe if ya'll could help me find one)

edit: http://savagediesel.com/Pages/Product%20Development/Downpipe%20Development.htm those are really the answer, but he doesn't seem to want to selllll the durn things

you want a mk2 VW intake manifold.. from a jetta, golf, or something like that.. passenger side entrance. gonna have to fab up something to replace the throttle body, for the boost piping to hook up to..

and if you are not going to have the exhaust shop do it (preferred method) then just build something yourself. i had to build the flange and the whole down pipe, every piece of it..

(if you are trying to modify a stock engine mount, its going to break, and total your turbo and everything else in the way as the engine is falling towards the ground) the stock engine mounts are cast aluminum, and you have to cut a notch soo big in it that there is just millimeters of aluminum holding it together.. if you try to cut and weld the stock engine mount to fit the VNT, you are going to find out that it wont work. you have to notch the turbo so that about a quarter of the compressor housing is basically hidden above the engine mount.. trust me, mk2s are my favorite cars, and i still dont have my TD sitting in one because of engine mount problems.

before you break that turbo, why dont you just trade it to me for a normal turbo off a 1.6?

92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

does this mean the fox intake i just pulled won't fit? it has driver's side intake. if it bolts on, then that's better for me so that the intercooler doesn't have to come back the same direction, as my turbo is on the passenger's side
and if you are not going to have the exhaust shop do it (preferred method) then just build something yourself. i had to build the flange and the whole down pipe, every piece of it..

(if you are trying to modify a stock engine mount, its going to break, and total your turbo and everything else in the way as the engine is falling towards the ground) the stock engine mounts are cast aluminum, and you have to cut a notch soo big in it that there is just millimeters of aluminum holding it together.. if you try to cut and weld the stock engine mount to fit the VNT, you are going to find out that it wont work. you have to notch the turbo so that about a quarter of the compressor housing is basically hidden above the engine mount.. trust me, mk2s are my favorite cars, and i still dont have my TD sitting in one because of engine mount problems.

ok my goal isn't really power, it's fuel mileage, and sound... mostly sound. any power i pick up i hope is down low, as i don't ring this thing out. this turbo came with the  car, so, in the interest of $$, i was going to work with it. i'm all by myself out here.. my junkyards strip anything valuable out before it hits the lot, and i can promise they don't have anything TDI.
if i switched turbos with you.. what will i need then? i essentially cannot just go get a TD intake manifold.. if you can get me closer to success then i'd certainly entertain a trade.
if you intend to just lift a good VNT off me.. well that would suck :(

the only local vdub shop said he might have a TDI downpipe that i could have a for just $40 or so.. somethin i could work with to get an exhaust. but that's a maybe, and a probably not at that, as he didn't really even know which turbo i was talkin about

myke_w (also a vendor here it seems) was asking about this over at tdiclub, and someone said:

"reenforce it if you plan on abusing it on the strip. My mount was fine ona most surfaces. Hell an unpreped drag strip at waterfest did not cause issues but a well prepped track with cool air (faster/more power) helped break the bracket."

[/URL]
now that appears to a slightly different (maybe newer) motor mount, as it's only got one hole.. and mine has three. but i guess it's the same size.. and would need the same amount of delete

thats a mk3 mount.. there WAY different from the mk2 mount..

just pointing something out, thats a 1.9 that its bolted to.. look at all the block webbing...

16mm taller than our 1.6 engines.. the turbo is going to be ~2/3 of an inch deeper into the mount on a 1.6, i knew it looked taller than when i had mine mocked up with a cut up mk2 motor mount once..

the turbo intake will be below the surface of the motor mount that way.. you will have to notch the top of it too..

(and if you trade me your turbo, i wouldnt rip you off.. i have a stock TD setup, both manifolds and turbo. nothin else tho. i used all the other parts on my n/a conversion, i just like the VNT turbos better is all)
