Electronically controlled wastegate?
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:42:31 pm »
Looking for some input here.

I want to have an electronically controlled wastegate off my exhaust manifold, mostly so I can essentially turn the boost "off" while driving on the highway. Sitting at 10psi and spiking to 20 every time I accelerate for a second gets old quick, particularly when it sounds like a jet. That, plus it's easy to adjust max boost as my boost gauge has an adjustable relay output.

Problem is, I can't seem to find one anywhere. Adding the fact that it would need to be 100% duty cycle makes it even more interesting; I can't just have a solenoid pulling the wastegate spring out.

One idea I have is getting a really low (<5psi) sprung wastegate and simply having a solenoid in my line coming from the manifold. That way, I can have a toggle switch in the car I can turn on when I only want 5psi boost, or I can flick that off and boost normally until my boost gauge opens the solenoid up and opens the wastegate.

Any other suggestions?

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

what you could do is have a solenoid that opens and closes off boost pressure to the wastegate, then you can get 2 adjustable pressure switches, which are on a toggle switch so u can flip between a low and high boost setting.  we use them at work alot, i am a bio medical technician so we deal with lots of pressurized air and other junk.  we use the mpl501 here at work.  heres their website i've been planning on doing this if i ever get my car together haha.
