No power off idle 1.6TD
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:42:26 am »
Just replaced head gasket(milled head) installed GT15 turbo(spools quicker) Thought I had the timing right(.030) but smokes alot at idle and you have to rev the engine to move the Caddy or engine stalls. Can the timing still be off that much? Or why else?

You have it timed to .030"? That's way low..

That is 0.762 millimeters, and that is at least 0.12 mm to low from the lowest stock setting.

Re time the motor to at least 0.037" and your problems will be solved, for a little more performance with the exception of more NOX (who cares ;)) you could bump the timing up to 0.040-0.041" :D

Problems with not enough fuel getting to the Inj pump will do the same thing..
99' 1.9 1Z Tdi, hybrid pump -1.9 housing & rover internals, 2052 wastegate turbo,.25 hflox nozzles, SDI intake, CTN tranny
96' 1.6 TD Golf, Giles pump, VNT 17, Gas changed to Diesel, Air to Water Int.

When timed properly, yes it could be a culprit.. But the fact that he has stated it is timed to 0.030" is the problem. The timing is very retarded, I'm actually surprised its running so low!

Agreed on the timing.

As an aside, why are we talking inches when we are talking timing? Is it common for people to use sillymeasurement on this board?
