Ant tips to jack up a Rabbit?
« on: January 25, 2006, 09:50:08 pm »
I'm looking to add a bit more clearance to my '84 Rabbit GTi (with a 1.6TD swapped in  ). I've been told mk2 or mk3 springs will lift the front, but I can't seem to find a way to jack the rear an extra inch or two. Any ideas/experiences? And am I correct about the front springs? Thanks, guys!

Here's the rabid rabbit that needs a lift:

'84 GLi 1.9 16V
'03 GLi 24V 6spd

Parts Place Inc. has heavy duty springs, they claim are 20% stiffer than the stiffest factory spring and the vehicle rides a "fraction of an inch" higher than stock.  Dont know if that's what you need or not but it might be worth a shot.  They are in section 4 of the online catalog, page 33 in the PDF.  :)

Hi  I used cabrio springs on my bunny . taper wound w 1 extra  coil for the rear , I used the spring mounts that were on the ones used ,,,, the fronts stock had 3 white marks on them,,, the cabrio springs had 3 green marks, looked thicker gage ( didn't measure them ,sorry) and 1 extra coil..... I've also got audi 4000 gt wheels (14") w 185 70 14 bridgestones potenzas (Costco specials!)  those tires are 24" dia instead of the stock 175 70 13 's 22" dia for a inch of extra ground clearance.   It's not the ideal dragracing setup, that tire an wheelsetup is 34 pounds v the stock steelies an tires at 31#. (this I weighed !!) by the way the audi rims w 185 60 14's weigh ! !! 31 !!!! pounds........ and are 22" dia ........    this looks like I lifted my rabbit about 2 "      some one asked me if it was a 4wd  while standing on a streetcorner in SF one day...... he looked real puzzeled  :? when I said no it not a 4wd but it is a jackrabbit!!! you know ,??? the Baja model?????????
ps Jakes got pics of the wheels on here some place....... I think their called rollas
gotta post a pic of it sometime......
what kind of front grill is that???? w the grills over the lights???? and is that a hood scoop??? stock ??? Oh boy !!! somthing new to hunt down!!!!
I take it that your doing this for more dirt road clearance?? That's why I did this,,,,  being that your away up there in Nova Scotia w lots of  snow?? it could make using chains kinda hard,,, tires clear everything but by just 3/8" or so......... studded tires ?????

Cya!!!!!! 8)

hey
I learned this from an old school vw mechanic friend of mine
take an extra set of rear lower spring perches (junk yard or spares)
and then install them upside down on top of the lower perches on your struts, and then re-assemble the struts.
this will boost it by about 3/4" plus it stiffens up the ride a little
if you haul heavy or a trailer the car doesn't look like it's ass is drooping

cheers pete

yeah that ssounded good ...i had lifted arabbit sedan with a2 springs up front and in teh rear i used the a2 golf rear strut..but the lower perch hits teh rabbit body..so i cut teh perch side off and beat teh body a little to make them fit..it worked sweet then.. im lifting my rabbit pickup now..i had it too high and blew the front struts out from being fully extend 24-7 now i am trying something new in the front..not too new but just adifferent combo..i've havd the damn thing apart 4 times already ha...
