I have a 1994 aaz engine and my trans has decided to lock itself into third gear. I am looking for a replacement, used good trans. I am hoping to find one close to me. I am moving this next week to eastern Iowa, I will have to tow the car or trailer it. Thanks for any help.

should have said that you need a mk3 big input shaft trans, not just an 020 trans.
most 020 trannies wont bolt up to your engine..

An 020 will work on your engine no problem. Some mk3 had 020 and some had 02a. 02a is the cable shift type. Either one will bolt into a mk2 or mk3. You may need to swap flanges. Mk3 tdi's had the 02a while the AAZ-equipped mk3's had the 020.

i told him most 020s wont work because of the different 22mm main shaft.. he needs one with a 24mm main shaft..
the mk3, and 16v cars were the only ones that got big main shaft trannies. and the 16v boxes have less than desireable ratios..
he wont need a flange swap, all the big shaft trannies got 100mm inners..

My friend has a mk3 gas 020 trans that would be perfect for you, on the east side of Madison. Mk3s like to kill reverse gear, so we'd have to make sure that's good on it. I'm running to his house tonight. I'll pm you my number to call/text if you haven't moved yet.

sorry, answered your message before I read your post. I have moved, but will be in the area off and on, I may still be interested. I brought the car to Iowa on Thursday and will be tearing into it soon. Thanks

he could still use the smaller input shaft 020 if it has the mk2/3 mount holes simply by changing clutch disk.

the title says he wants a BIG INPUT SHAFT trans tho..
sure, swapping to a mk2 trans will work with the right parts.. but i dont think he wants to go that far.
and the CHD is a great trans anyways, dunno why someone would want to swap it..

AFAIK, the only mk3s that got the 24 mm main shaft were the 2.0L gassers. Both of my AAZs with CHD trannys had/have 22 mm shafts. I believe any 020 trans will bolt up...he's likely going to change the clutch anyway. If he has to swap flanges its the perfect time for new shaft seals. Of course he'll want diesel ratios tho...
