Hi, havin some problems, cooling fan isn't working, so dug in and looks like all is well under hood, got to fuse panel, and I have some relays that are crapped out due to corrosion (wet long time ago). Which relay is for the cooling fan? Relays are marked with 19, 4, and 258. Anyone know what circuits they're for?
ac or not???
no ac eliminate it all... wire bat to positive side of fan... wire negative to thermo switch then thermo switch to batt... no more wiring issue...
now if ac... the fan is controlled thru the ac relay.. it tends to be a big deep relay (kinda like glow plug/wiper intermitten).. but been so long not positive on its box location.. but being that you got only 3-4 deep ones.. glowplugs/fuel pump... wipers if you got intermittens, turn which has 3 prongs, and then ac... its kinda easy to narrow down..
Okay, Fan is controled by TWO relays, #13 (the A/C relay)(For when you turn on A/C, the fan and an idle speed air device come on) and a "stock" 40 Amp relay.
The stock unit might have a #53 on it, or it might be blank.
The #19 relay is the delayed wiper relay.
Does #4 relay have a grill on the end? Beeping thing for open door/seat belt warning.
I am thinking fan relay is on the left side of pannel, second one from bottom? At least my 84 GTI's is there, the 81 caddy has it on top of the pannel.
258? No clue.
If you have water damage, check for corrosin in and on the back of the relay/fuse plate.

You mean more wiring issues, running 21-25 amps through the thermo switch.. that's asking for melted wires and more headaches. If you do it this way.. atleast fuse it and use a relay!!
dude.. been doing that mod for 25+ years.. and its the ground side not power.. i understand the relay.. as i use way to many of those.. but like i said.. long time mod thats always worked no issue.. good for rusty/crusty fuseboxes..
the ground does not have current passing through it eh
