odometer stopped but speedo works
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:29:49 am »
This just happened a couple of days ago. I took out the speedo and noted the red gear that drives the worm gear was pushed out a little and not driving the worm gear. I just pushed it back in and put it back together and it works fine, for now. Should I have disassembled it and see what caused the gear to shift? I wonder how long this repair will last?

link above sells both the little red gear... and they make a replacement for the potmetal gear on the other end of the shaft which failed and allowed the shaft to slide out...

else there is a place in tx called over seas speedometer that for 100-200 will fix it for you...

the issues...

tx is ligit...

diy = odometer tampering...

so rember that...

If the gear is cracked and just moved on the shaft, here's a cheap fix.

When I fixed mine I rolled my odo ahead! Lol as it was broken for the last 10 years of its life. However I also had that 81 under the 84's tags :o lol

Workin' on the golf cluster now tryin' to install my genuine diesel tach ;D. The odo doesn't work so I'm fiddling with it too. IDK why they made them so cheesy........here's some pics of my problem.

Later, I took to many tries logging in to photobucket.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

mk2's had real issues with the pot metal gear letting the shaft slide out.. mk1s tend to break that gear but my 81 coupe has the broken plastic and bad pot metal piece.. aka why i posted the one link for diy..

what you putting a tach into a mk1??? i got some really nice pics of how i made up a mk1 diesel cluster with factory mk2 tach and vdo BOOST gauge... requires the 81 and older dasher/jetta cluster though... shift light kills it on 82+

Yup it was the metal gear that let go of the shaft, I took it all apart and peened it around the hole and put it back together........seems to be working so far. Second one I've had do that.

I'm putting a diesel tach into my '92 NA golf. I don't need a big analog clock staring at me haha.

92Eco, sorry to take over your thread but I bet your having the same problem I just fixed. You can buy a new metal gear or try what I did which is not guaranteed at all. Any time you remove the needle it's highly unlikely that it'll ever be accurate again though unless you get it calibrated.

Pics:
Notice the red gear is slid out of line with the worm gear a bit, the metal gear at the other end of the shaft is supposed to hold it in.
