I'm using the Mercedes T3, 45 trim turbo. Very laggy. Yes you can daily drive it but you goota hold it full throttle till 5K to have any fun with it. But it was built as a race engine, not a uber hyper mileage engine.

I just want to get a quick word in on the cold starting. Mine smokes white for the first 45s of starting, even when it was 80f this morning. haha. Some may call this a "cold start issue" but she started at -12f this past winter with no block heater. Anyone else get smoke with a cold engine and a warm ambient temp?

My Giles pump is timed to .0378" {he said to go to .374"} Mine started no block heater at -15F. Mine is a 1.6 head and I still will have smoke if I don't pull the cold start for 5 minutes of idle. I have smoke when colder than 50F for at least a minute with the cold start pulled. Gone once warm though.

mine smokes grey on every startup, and still starts no trouble all winter.

I don't know what advance I am running in VW terms(have not stuck a dial indicator in it yet) but its lots, and the advance piston cover has been modded for lots of dynamic advance too.

helps lots when burning lots of fuel

I've a very similar setup and it sound like a bag of spanners, VERY LOUD.

I've ran the timing all over the shop and settled around the original 1.2mm, less and the idle got worse to the stage it wouldn't idle. Also it would pour white smoke.

More than 1.2 and the clack would get much worse.

I'm so concerned that I'm doing serious damage to the components, I pulled the pump last night and started to swap it back to a 9mm head.
