82 diesel idles rough
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:33:19 pm »
OK, I have fixed just about everything on this Rabbit. I am now on to the eingine. It has a new timing belt and water pump. I am now trying to figure out what is up with the idle. It starts easy everytime and it runs great all the time. When it idles it vibrates the whole car, you can really see it in the mirrors. I did turn up the idle screw to smooth it out but when I did this it wouldn't let the engine go back to idle, it would keep a very high rev going like you where holding down on the pedal. I could leave it in high gear and once stopped let out on the clutch and it would make it drop back to the idle speed I had set.  Do these 1.6 engines just idle that rough? How do you check the rpms on one of these?

your motor mounts are probably shot.. causing the vibration.

and if your RPMs hang, then your max fuel screw is probably too far in..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.
