1.9 head on N/A 1.6
« on: January 24, 2006, 04:39:49 pm »
I know you can put the 1.9 head on 1.6TD, but can you put it on an N/A 1.6? If so will the engine benefit from this? It would be sucking in more air so im assuming it would do something.

thanks,
Chris

It would fit so long as the 1.6 is hydraulic lifter. If not it could be adapted, but most people wouldn't want to do what is necessary. You would trade some low end torque for top end power, but you should see some nice gains from it.

Keep in mind that these directions are what you'd do to put a gas 1.8 head onto a gas 1.6/1.7 bottom end with some of the diesel adaptations thrown in there. Someone who has studied the differences more closely should be consulted.

The hydraulic lifter engine has a second oil return on the front of the block. It must be plugged and a reducer pressed into the center oil return in order for it to match up properly. Also, keep in mind that the 1.9 has 12mm head bolts so you want to be sure that your engine does as well or find a way of centering the head properly. You should consider swapping out the oil pump for one designed for a hydraulic lifter engine so that you aren't short on oil supply for those lifters.
