Nissan Titan w/ 4 cyl Cummins diesel in the works
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:39:42 am »
I'd buy one. Made right here in the good ole USA (and right down the road from me in Smyrna, TN). Methinks Mahindra screwed themselves to the stone-age with all their unscrupulous business practices. If they ever think an American would buy their ugly turd truck at 19/21 MPG versus a combined 28 MPG Nissan Titan, they've got another thing coming.

It's funny Nissan isn't developing their own motor. They used to make fine diesel motors that were used in all types of USA trucks and mowers (International Scouts). I guess a 15 Million dollar grant from the USA helps.

the only crappy part is, the nissan titan has a HORRIBLE electrical system.. the few that i have experience with, they have all had problems. EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS..

the day my buddy drove his home, the heater started acting up, then the next week, some electrical distribution thing under the hood went out, 800 bucks just for the part.. and it controls like half the electrical systems on the truck also..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

I'm not sure I like the looks of the Titan either, I don't get why all the manufacturers came up with the idea that pickup trucks should look like a boxing glove.

What America really needs right now is a useful, cheap but comfortable compact pickup truck that gets 30 mpg.

Fords close, 22-23mpg.. and a whopping 365hp at 5000rpm and 425ft.lb at 2500rpm.

Well, of course. I've driven the 4cyl TD Hilux in Guatemala in the jungle, and it's a focking bear! That would be ideal. They only thing is, I think they still use torsion bar suspension up front, unlike the Tacoma. No thanks. But if that was all that was out there...

The VW Amarok is another beast. But the $40K pricetag is ridiculous, and I'm not sold on VW's common rail with all the High Pressure Lift pump failures.

Another great truck is the Mitsubishi L200. It's a very capable truck with a 4 cyl TD motor. Again, not in the USA. Thank you Chicken Tax.

Mahindra was the hope for an economical, small pickup that was capable of towing and hauling. Sadly, the EPA estimates were in the toilet (19/21): well below the projected 30ish MPG,  and Mahindra broke their contract with Global Vehicles which set up all the dealers and financing in the USA. After GV did all the ground work, Mahindra felt that they could go over GV's head to the people they contracted with. Not so hot in legal terms. So, they've got like 3 lawsuits on their hands (two from GV, and a new one from the dealers that have invested hundreds of thousands each, and haven't seen a product in over 3 years).

It was too good to be true: 28-32 MPG, 4 cyl diesel, 1.25 ton capacity, plenty of torque to tow, and under $30K.

Why is it that US truck manufacturers STILL make these focking ridiculous "BRO-Dozer" trucks with V8 diesels. Yes, farmers need those. But the rest of would settle for 4 cyl, towing power, and MPG.

Well I mean there is clearly a market for these "BRO-Dozer" trucks.. or else there would be 4cyl diesel trucks in North America ;D

If you need to haul 15,000+ lbs at least once a year with your truck or anywhere near it regularly... you kinda need it.

I would gake the Hilux over the Amarok, they seem to be available in places that already have the Hilux anyway. I have been inside both vehicles. I'm just not convinced VW knows what they're doing and can build a pickup that will hold up... What really irks me is that in Central/South America you can still get a new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series Pickup.

VW already has put Cummins engines in their big trucks (commercial line that they don't sell here).
