That is brutal! I checked mine when it had about 280,000 and it wasn't nearly that bad. There was maybe 1/16" buildup in it. You certainly have your work cut out for you there.

You really need to drive them hard to clean out that gunk on a regular basis, or adjust the EGR duration. My car had that before I bought it, and it was cleaned out. EGR adaptation was done, and it's only got oil on the intake after 120K.
I would imagine your turbo is next. The vanes coke up too and will stick causing over or under boost.
Last one of these I did, I tried the propane torch + air hose trick. Man, it's slick at tits and hilarious to watch. It's like a flamethrower! Much easier than trying to clean it through conventional means, and it doesn't do any damage to the intake. Though, the one I did had the EGR that came off. I'm not so sure I'd try in on an AHU or 1Z with the EGR that's part of the intake manifold.

I am always amazed when I see this much carbon and resins.
Apparently this car was driving until it was taken apart.
EGR is evil.

Theres 2 ways to clean the ports. One at a time or pull the cam. I did the latter because i was already in there doing a belt. Anyways if you do it with the cam in, ya gotta make sure that valve is closed! Then bust out the PROPANE torch. Not an acetylene torch. Burn em out and pick away with screwdrivers and brushes and vacuums and air pressure. If you heat it and blow it out be careful of cinders burning you.
ask me how i know. I cheated, i put in a solid copper egr gasket. Then i cut out a nice little piece of tape for the cel. Stupid computers get it rechipped but i was cheap. Best tdi i had was a M haha no clogging intake crap.
Subject car was a 98 with like 120k and i couldnt even get my thumb in the main part of the intake. Maybe thats y it hunted and surged at wot over 3k. Ya think?
