Replacing 5th gear bearing
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:49:44 am »
How hard would it be to change the 5th gear bearing in in a 5 speed MKII Jetta transmission? I'm getting ready to put my 85 Jetta back together and I remembered that the transmission had a whistle in 5th gear when I put it up a couple years ago. The previous owner had ran it low in gear oil and his mechanic told him the bearing was damaged but not to worry about it as long as he didn't mind the noise. It has probably had a hundred thousand kms put on it since and still works great and I've gotten used to the noise but I figured I should fix it if possible since I have it out.

click away on that site. There is tons of info on how to do what and many things relating exactly to 5th gear. As much as you wanted to know about the VW 020 trans and more you didn't. If you email him he will answer you eventually but usually refer you to his pages with all the pics.
