AFN?
« on: May 10, 2011, 08:50:13 pm »
I need to know what make an engine code a AFN. I know its a TDI but is it a 1.9 TDI with a different tune? Or is it different injectors and pump?

The AFN engine was the first 110bhp engine. It is basically the same as the 1Z and AHU engine, but with a VNT turbo and different profile cam plate in the injection pump, and the 205 injectors.

Also the AFN and AHU got upgraded pistons compared with the 1Z (even though the AHU is still only 90bhp).

The AFN does not have the newer pendulum engine mounts, as it was fitted to early Audis, and the rare 110bhp B4 Passat and A3 Golf.

Also the AFN has the water pump driven by a seperate belt (not the timing belt).

The AFN would be a better choice for a swap into an older car (A1, A2 or A3).

So is there any wiring that connects to the VNT turbo?

Will the wiring from an AFN work on a AHU?

I have a vnt-15 off a AFN (from what I was told) it is the two piece design. There isn't any wiring to the turbo, just a vacuum tube to the vane actuator.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

You would need to talk to a tuner to see if they could control the vnt with the AHU ecu. You would need to add a n75 valve if the ecu is able to control it.

I have the matched AFN ECU with the wiring harness, all new, that is going onto an AHU.
I know the AHU has a wastegated turbo that uses the N75, but if the AFN uses a VNT solenoid, would'nt it be the same? So,my question is, will the AFN computer opperate the N75 solenoid for the wastegated turbo. Or will that need to be writen into the ECU?

I'm guessing it's programmed into the ECU.

The AHU has a pressure controlled wastegate while the AFN is vacuum so the N75s are not the same. Somewhere on the tdiclub forum I saw that the N18 valve for the EGR valve could be used to control the VNT, as EGR is vacuum operated, but not ideal as it has smaller holes so reaction might be a bit slower.
