Sounds like it is only hitting on 2 cyl. I would see what timing value is, condition of injectors, and maybe raise the idle some.
Sounds ok once you pedal it. So maybe not the timing/injectors...but it can't hurt. How long has it ran? Could it be air in the lines?

i would check compression, and raise your idle speed some.. maybe get the injectors pop tested if you can. how long does it do that for? until it warms up, or any time its at idle?

FWIW, that sounds worse than my car starting in 15*f temps, with 2 bad glow plugs, right after being heat seized..  :o

x2 it only sounds like its hitting on 2 cyls when its idling. engine is shaking like its missing too..

Vince Waldon's how to time should be in our FAQ section. DO NOT MESS THE TIMING UP...it will kill your engine.

Another angle, it sounds just like the prothe/hans diesel pump that I had on an N/A. Is it something from him?

I was already looking at the Vince writeup, def not a proth pump lol it was a stock TD pump just recently resealed, heres a question, my brother was putting some time in on the motor, its a hydro motor, if he put a cam from a mech head on it would that make it act totally retarded? I always use a socket to lock my pump into place when i change things, ive messed with the belt enough i may just get another belt and swap out belts incase its stretched..

mech cams are a smaller base circle im pretty sure.. like wouldnt work, or if it did, it would make soo much top end noise you would know it wasnt right..

Why did you say bad timin will kill an engine?

Why did you say bad timin will kill an engine?

considering the tolerances if you have the timing out far enough, pistons and valves will meet in the middle and make some nasty noises.

That sounds like fueling issues to me.

The fact that the engine spins up and spools the turbo, shows me its running ok. If it can do that it should be able to idle just fine. If you sat and let it run like that, what happens? does it just continue or does it smooth out? Was this engine just cold started?

We need quite a bit more information to diagnose over the web.. and through text. ;)

Are your glow-plugs all working correctly? I've had this exact problem on a few diesels na or td.. its been air in the lines/pump.

mech cams have a larger base circle due to the lifters being thinner.

what RPM is it idling at? try kicking the speed up a bit and see where that gets you

I dunno, I've turned my idle down so far (for ***s and giggles) that the alt lamp was flickering, and so was the oil buzzer..

and it was running just fine.
