Almost ready to swap transmissions 4sp to 5sp
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:02:48 am »
I've got the linkage arms, the shifter itself..what else do I need to pull off? Do I need the arm from the shifter to the (I forget what it's called), the vertical arm that interfaces with the little ball? I'm venturing into unknown territory.

Final drive ratio is the same, so I shouldn't have to be concerned, right?

i don't know a thing about what you need, but i have ea 5spd trans, and i've got a 4spd in storage..just the aluminum chunk nothing else, so do a real good write-up with pix if you can so that when i have to go this route you've got me covered!

I'd pull the whole linkage assy to have on hand. There are many parts you can buy new, but the main parts you ABSOLUTELY need are:

1) Trans mount bracket for the driver's side to fit a MK1
2) Shifter box (it mounts to the body under the shifter lever: the 5-speed version allows more lateral travel to get it into 5th gear)
3) The relay lever at the end of the LONG shaft that goes under the tunnel on the car. It fits over the splined end and is held on with a clamp.

The rest of the parts you'll need you can/may want to buy new (all the ball and socket linkage rods: there are 2 of them). Get a bushing rebuild kit while you're at it.
