Thats what im trying to find a 7A gearbox. Ill pay $500 for a good used one. If the person knows its good
you can use any 5 spd. transmission from any 80 to 98 golf jetta rabbit or pickup as long as it has a cable clutch. They're called 020 transmissions by VW cause that's what any part number for the unit starts with - 020. Some use different clutch discs but otherwise they all interchange. For your application though the 7A is probably the best because of the gear ratios VW put in that unit.
if I were you I would not get a gasser trans your car will be numb off the line. Make sure the trans you get has a 3.89 or 3.94 final drive ratio.
But isnt a 7A trans out of a gasser?
Don't put a gasser tranny in your diesel. I have one in mine.

It's not fun.

7A was kind of a one size fits all for 1984 models. My 84 Jetta TD has one, it's great for a 1.6 engine in a Mk1, turbo or not.
Why do you NOT like it shawak23?
Why DO you like it ilikevwdiesel?
just email me bro I'll explain it to you.

LKQ in Durham has 5 mk2's on hand right now.
That was report from Wolfsburged on Sunday.
All gassers - and think all had engine/trans.
I haven't been to GSO U-Pull recently - but need to go soon and take inventory.
You'll want 85 or 86 only - if from mk2.
And double check for the multi-provision mounts on those.
NCDubs.org can probably help you out too.
The mk2 trans will bolt up correctly? whats the code for those?
I might go to GSO u-pull-it in May ill keep you posted when i go and what i see.
In your mk1 - only 85-86 mk2 trans will direct bolt / mount. Newer models would need some bracket / mounts fabbed. Check out
www.brokevw.com he has pix showing the mk1 mk2 differences. Most 85-86 have both provisions.
www.a2resource.com has all the tranny codes apps ratios etc.... on my cell phone now or would give direct links.

i had a AUG in my 81 rabbit.. it was out of a 92 Jetta..
most mk2 trannies are useable in a mk1. you may have to tap threads in 3 holes, and install some studs for the rear mount, but thats it.
Im not going to get something i have to modify. I think im just going to get a FF trans. I think i found on that hopefully will work...

what would you have to modify? FWIW, all mk2 trannies ive seen, are all drilled for the mk1 mount studs.. only other thing you might have to change on a mk2 gear box is the drive flanges, and both of those projects can be done in less than an hour together..
Ive found one i just bought a FF gearbox! yay lol
