Right then, I'm in the process of tuning my GTD, I have fitted a boost controller, it is now running at 17psi, pulling well through the revs (apart from off boost), but no smoke, so its very lean. The max fuel screw is wound in as far as it will go too. Next week I will be shimming the governor, so I guess the fuel screw will have to be wound back out? Also whats this I keep hearing about the cone under the LDA (if my car has it? Mine has a torx smoke screw on top), I've done a search and can't make anything out from it. I have turned the smoke screw in about 1 and half turns, it smokes a tad off boost with my foor down. Can anyone clear this up for me? Do I need to do something with the LDA before shimming the governor? Or is it not neccessary?
have you read the FAQ on this sit eabout tuning your IDI?
youve got max fueling turned in, and the smokescrew turned in a bit.. and it only smokes a tad? My 1.6td with a 1/2 turn on the max screw over stock billows.. Do you have an EGT gauge? You may be severely damaging your engine..
EGTs are OK, and if anything the coolant temp is lower on a good run than normal! I'm very much doubting that the max fuel screw is in all the way though, From a standard tune I only had to turn it in about 3/4 of a turn till it wouldn't go in anymore, and it had a locknut, and a small shaft with the flat screwdriver bit. But "attached" (or rather part of) to the locknut is some kind of metal collar, which I thought was a bit odd?
That's the anti-tamper collar. Sounds like you only turned it in a bit. That jamb nut is to keep the screw from moving around on its own. You have a LOT more turning before it's maxed out. The anti-tamper collar pops off with a flat head screw driver, and once you back the jamb nut off you can crank it in further, but be careful you don't go too crazy... For what it's worth, I'd say leave it alone until after you do the gov-mod...
I'l leave it be for now, I thought the collar had already been removed as the idle speed on had a red plastic collar on it that I had to break off. Should I expect to wind the max fuel screw out when I've done the governor mod?

No, I normally add 1/4 turn when I do a gov mod and then go from there - normally adding more.

i did the governor mod, and the mod so i could do more than a quarter crank of the fuel screw at the same time..
im about 2-3 full turns past where the collar used to stop the fuel screw..

That is not idle speed. Any pump that has that red anti-tamper device will have a separate fast idle lever on the back of the pump. That is what controls idle. What you adjusted is the residual fuel screw.
