Which engine is better when it comes fuel economy? Also when increasing power with a 1.6TD to be equal or better then a AAZ how is the fuel economy compared to a stock AAZ?
Thanks

the smaller engine, by nature, is capable of better economy..
and fuel economy can be good on a highly modified diesel, just stay out of the throttle..
best way to get good smileage, is to stay out of the boost, or keep it as low as possible. it takes fuel to make boost.
if you want mileage, ive heard of a few people getting 70+ mpg out of 1.5 and 1.6 n/a diesels.

Thanks that's What I thought. 70+ mpg would be nice but I want something that's not as slow as a 1.6 n/a. How would the fuel economy be of a highly modified 1.6TD when in boost a lot compared to a stock AAZ?

mines modified, im in the boost alot, i get about 30 mpg. (1.6TD in a 84 rabbit)
how highly modified are you talking?
mines got a cranked up fuel pump, modified governor, a VNT turbo off a 01 TDI, an intake from a mk2 gasser, an intercooler, and nitrous when i can afford to keep the bottle full..

i have a 93 Passat with the AAZ motor and my pump on it. ported head, full 2.5" exhaust and down pipe. small stock i/c'er
TDI 5 speed tranny. at 75 MPH i'm revving 2850rpm.
i drive this car daily and very hard too. hwy mostly and doing 80-90 mph all the time.
i always get a minum of 600mi on 65-68 liters.
lately with my motor getting looser 30,000mi on fresh rebuild i've been getting almost 700mi
running 20psi of boost BTW

100+ hp would be nice.
Giles how much power does your AAZ make? Also how many rpm you turning At 55 and 65 mph? Nice to now that a AAZ will give that kind of fuel economy with an engine tuned like yours and driven that hard.

Anyone who tells you that you can get 70 mpg from an IDI VW diesel is lying or stupid.

Anyone that makes such a broad statement such as this one is either inexperienced or a fool.

AAZ in a mk2 Jetta, pump twisted up a little (1/2 turn), 1.6 aneroid pin, straight pipe. Best of 57 mpg imperial (49l for 1000kms) on a road trip loaded with 4 people and luggage. Never did any better with a 1.6.

I am getting 54 mpg at 55-60mph with a stock 1.6l n/a engine and a k14 turbo added on with no additional fueling. I get 775miles on 14.2 gallons of fuel.. (Topped off where fuel drips on the ground)
thats running about 75% freeway and 25% city. with no front bumper, a leaky fuel/water seperator, and a leaky fuel pump.
I was getting 55mpg with out the turbo, or ip leak and a front bumper @55mph

just upgraded my clutch to kevlar and better pressure plate and will get it dynoed for reall this summer.
i am reving 2250 at 60 mph.

I have seen personally a stock 1.5n/a get 62mpg in a stock 80 rabbit 5speed. So i don't see 70 with some mods being unreasonable! Alot of mileage is determined by how well you control your foot and where when and how you drive.
