FS: 1979 VW Rabbit 1.5 Diesel California $2,500 (usd)
« on: March 21, 2011, 07:41:04 pm »
Hello all, the time has come to part ways with my Rabbit.
It is a 1.5L with a 4 speed trans.  Drives and shifts good, just not very fast.
It was my daily driver for almost two years, then had to move to something for freeway commuting.
Currently on raceland coilovers with teardrop rims.

Bought from the second owner for 25+ years.
First owner sold it after a year in 1980.  Thought it was too small ;D
It has a spare fuel tank mounted in the rear hatch.
Manufactured by BEST Tank Company.  Still looks almost new.
Used it many times, extends the fuel range to over 800 miles!

Items that have been replaced:
Alternator-----------------last year
Starter-------------------6 months ago
Battery------------------one month ago
Rear wheel bearings-------last year
Tie rods------------------last year
tires----------------------last year
valve cover gasket(converted to studs/g60 style rubber) - last year
Raceland coilovers---------last year
Rear sway bar/bushings---last year
Shift linkage(all plastic links)-last year
Headlights(replaceable bulb)-2 years ago

Items that will go with the car:
Stock seats
Stock suspension
Roof rack and fairing
Set of 13" steel wheels(well used tires)
Good used Injector pump (na)

The car has been very good to me and would love it to go to a vw fan.
The motor is showing its age, as it burns and leaks oil.
I have almost no history from the previous owner, only word of mouth from the mechanic who worked on it in Redwood City.

The bad:
Injector pump is aided by spring to help it return to idle(otherwise it sticks).  Will need to be swapped out.  I have and will include a good used IP
Body has a few rust spots.
Under rear windows on driver and passenger side
Under windshield, near driver side
On hatch, near key lock
On passenger side fender...looks like it was hit and the panel was straightened out.  Only cosmetic, as hood and panel fit fine.
On the roof, several rust blemishes.  Could be sanded down coated with POR-15 and painted over with matching paint.

The frame is structurally sound, and the rust is only cosmetic. No rust in vital places like strut towers, uni-body, door sills and bottoms, and around windshield rubber.

Here is a link to many pictures.  I can add more if requested of specific items.

I have tried to describe the car as best as possible.  Again, asking $2,500 with listed items included.

Extras:
I have a complete 1.6 TD with LDA pump that can be included for the right price, or will be sold separately.
Ground control coilovers set of four perches and springs/hats (setup for Bilstein shocks)...sold extra
Raised early-style strut mounts, with new poly bushings.  Bearings could be replaced...sold extra

Thanks for looking.
