Smokey 1.6 NA after highway run
« on: April 07, 2011, 12:11:38 am »
Hey Guys !
I've been running my 82 Caddy, for about 10 months now..lots of fun to drive !
(parked it for the winter, except for a few nice days) Still running strong.
I have noticed, that after cruising on the highwat at 65 MPH for my 35 mile commute to work : I'm getting some fuel smoke after getting off the highway. It clears up within 1 or 2 miles on the secondary roads, while going from traffic light to traffic light.
It's not noticable in my sideview mirror during the day,but definately noticable at night...glooming in the cars headlights behind me :) Seems to be  some power loss at this point  as well.  I have checked for air bubbles in the clear fuel line, when I arrive at work, but the slight smoking has cleared up,by the time I get there. Air filter is like new and recently replaced the fuel filter (bosch) Timing is at 0.98 and pump resealed 6 months ago along with Gov Mod.
Engine consumes less than 1 qt of oil between oil changes
No coolant loss at all.
It's been very consistent.
Is this typical ?
As always, I appreciate you thoughts.

Here are a few pics

solid lifter head? valve adjustment?

could be oil from the breather building up in the manifold from blow by.

My guess is not fuel related, but could be.

ps, yyou can always see the haze is peoples headlights, even on stock tdis.

Could be blow by. You could try unhooking the vent hose that goes to the intake and place the hose in a large plastic water bottle with a rag in it, (make sure that you have a vent hole in the bottle) drive to work and see if the smoke continues and see if you have a lot of oil on the rag, its a cheap way to check. Also have you done a compression test?

Hi, Thanks for the replies.
I really don't think it's blowby,as oil consumption is very low (less than 1 qt between oil changes at 3000 miles)
Also, Intake mani is very clean.
I'll try disconnecting and rerouting breather, just to be sure.
Might be because I have fuel turned up a little and have done the gov mod ?
Power is good and Rarely have to go past half way on the go pedal - at around 45 MPG. I'm also using 2 cycle oil in the fuel,to help lube the IP at about 8 ounces per 5 gallons of fuel. Hmm ,maybe that's the extra smoke?
I didn't realize what Nathan mentioned- "ps, yyou can always see the haze is peoples headlights, even on stock tdis."
Nobody else around here is driving a VW diesel. So I never get the chance to drive BEHIND one to see :)
In fact, I finally saw a Jetta TDI the other night and followed him for a few miles,
He was taking it nice and slow and shifting early..No smoke at all.
But I'm comparing apples and oranges I suppose.
Thanks agian,Mike
