What seals the bleeder screw in an MK1 fuel filter housing??

I've ripped three of these things apart and there appears to be nothing in there, yet it looks like there is a groove for some sort of washer.. Not touchin the one on the Rabbit as it's not leaking, but the other several I've taken apart there appeared to be nothing, and they all leak the same place..  Is it fiber, and maybe disintigrating when I take it apart???

My truck has a copper washer in there, but I've seen rubber, and I've seen nothing. Who know. Maybe check ETKA: VW's online catalog.  You can access it from www.wagenstad.com

Thanks for the link Quantum, I'll have to look..   First time I ever had problems with one leaking, but this is also the first application where I had a pre filter lift pump..   I swear some of my past Vw's had a copper washer in there..  At the moment I'm afraid to check the Rabbit I'm driving, all the other ones appear to have nothing, but IDK..  It's an odd size whatever it is, been through all my copper/fiber/rubber stuff and nothing seems to fit too well..  I'd think an o-ring would just crush in there..

That's what I suspected..  They're probably turning to dust when I take em apart...  I think I found a copper washer that'll fit..

I was thinking they originally used a paper gasket but wasn't sure.

Thanks indeed Kevin..  Got brave and pulled the screw on my rabbit, sure enough the washer was still in tact.. I got several of the copper washers that'll fit in there for future problems...

i would be ripping my hair out if i had no help on that truck..

if it were up to me, i would fix the truck with a 94 pump.. get rid of all those stupid electronics..

IF it weren't for the 4l80e trans I think I would have done that on my '98 after the PMD failed the second time.. A stand alone controller for the trans was pushing $600, the D-Tech PMD was $200..  And since I already had the relocation kit (which is worth twice what they cost for the added ease of replacing these things) it didn't involve much work..  They guy I sold that truck too has put a crapload of miles on it and it's still going strong...

Other than the PMD and the speed sensor in the pump, the electronics aren't too terribly horrid on those..  It seems that GM had an optical sensor fetish for a while there, and the one in the pump is optical..  Very precise, but not so durable.. Dirt and water screws with them royally..  I've heard rumors that the dye in offroad fuel can stain the lense and screw with them, but I've not verified that...

I think that's more urban legend than anything else..  I've heard it talked about on other forums, but never from someone it's actually happened to...  I kinda doubt that the slight amount of dye is vicious enough to break down that plastic lense and stain it when the thing is submersed in diesel all the time...
