help please
« on: March 17, 2011, 12:31:53 pm »
I just inherited an 84 rabbit diesel from my father in-law. I need a good shop/mechanic to look it over and possibly fix, may need a new injector or two. it has been sitting for awhile and i would like to get it back on the road. the car is sitting in Auburn, WA. I have had gassers all my life but have always liked diesels and my wife cannot complain about a free car! its na and i would like to turbo it also some time in the future. any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Take some time and read though the FAQ..  That should cover the majority of your questions..  Pretty much anything else can be found with the search..  These cars are not terribly difficult to work on if you have some mechanical know how..    The most priceless item you can get is the Bentley repair manual..

my rabbit makes gassers cough..

it takes a gasser, with a damn good driver, or just flat out way more power than i do, to take me in a stop light race. or any other short race..

my car is quick, not fast.

(Oldsmodiesel...LMFAO!)

any other short race..

Right there is the key..  Even my CRACKED out NA has a pretty respectable 0-40 time...  IF I just had a tad more top end I could beat that Aspire I raced on the highway... ;D

*OT* fun story... A good friend of mine was and still is quite the avid redlight racer, even at 53 years young..  Back in the late 70's SHE had a 73 Duster  /6 3 on the tree, and would beat big blocks at the light.. Many were emasculated back then, later on it was the same routine in a diesel Caddy, and now by a base model 5 speed Cobalt..

Her strategy?  The light would flicker a fraction of a second before it changed...   ;D ;D ;D

i watch the lights perpendicular to the road im on, when the lights to my right or left turn red, then my light would be turning green by the time i was across the line..

that 85 big block 4x4 chevy was cake.. stop light to stop light.. smoked em..

civics and integras are really fun.. cause they dont make any power till 4k, and by then, im shifting second, they are just starting to go decent in first..

it really has alot to do with how good you can drive YOUR car tho..

i used to race people in my 86 toyota 2wd auto pickup.. and i would win alot. not like i ever raced a vette or nothing sweet like that, but you get the idea, its all about how you drive it..

my rabbit is not fast right now at all tho, it has a GC transmixer in it.. it used to do 100mph with the 4A and a turned up n/a, now it only does a little more than 100mph, but it gets there fast now..

i really need a good 5 speed in my car..

most guys can't launch above 3000 rpm because the tires won't hook up good. they also shift too early. I shift just before I hit the rev limiter in the top 3 gears and in first 3 grand or so and 5 grand in second.

i destroyed a hill of cars today on my drive to the city, already doing a 100kmh in 5th.. I dropped to fourth and started to scream past them up this hill in fourth at 130kmh (roughly 4300rpm's for me). Quite impressive for a stock 1.6 N/a if you ask me :P lol
